I've been wanting to upgrade my computer desk for awhile now to a sit stand. I think I might have found two things that will make it easier to do. You could make this for far cheaper, but it won't be as easy to adjust height. I find its healthier to stand generally when working, you burn more calories standing than sitting, and your spine is not compressed from improper sitting. You end up being more energized at the end of a work day than you would sitting down.

I was too much of a cheap bastard to replace my desk in grad school, so I would use a box about the right height difference to prop the keyboard on and adjust the monitor as much as I could. Honestly, it was pretty good workflow--I could work a while sitting, then stand up and work longer. My back felt much better, and my shoulders (where I was starting to get some RSI) were better as well. Recommended, though expensive to get a proper setup.

There is a 400 dollar attachment that clips on to a desk. It allows you to move it up and down for sitting and standing. That's probably the cheapest and most practical.

Get a treadmill desk, much better than a standing desk and you get a small work out too.

I use a standing desk. It hasn't changed my life but it's better than sitting down. While I'm working I walk around, do some stretches or grab some weights for a moment. Good for my concentration and productivity.

I have a motorized desk at work that I can raise lower. Given that I spend 6-7 hours/day in front of the computer the option to change position is very relaxing for my back. No matter what your poise is like you should spend at most 4h/day sitting down.

So the changeable modes on the desk really takes a loaf of. You can get cheap and still good quality motorized desks at IKEA.

@vicious- I checked Ikea's site and did not find any motorized versions. I wonder if that is worth it over the pneumatic lift ones like the ergo fit one.

@rawgod- That sounds like id does change your life. If your moving around and can concentrated better that is great.

@malc- Don't have the space for it my room. They look fun, especially if your going really slow. But even just standing is more calorically intensive than sitting. I don't think sitting is really that good for the back. Its very easy to slouch or lean back in a chair.

@kbell : You can get short treadmills, your only supposed to walk at a slow speed. They can take up the same amount of space a chair and a small desk would. If you make it a treadmill desk, you can lose 20 pounds probably if your overweight, this guy did:

Have this in my office. I'm a big dude, 6"6, many many years of playing hoop, and my knees can get a little stiff.

Some crazy dominating shit when clients come in - which I guess was a small added bonus, but hitting the switches on it is a cool talking point with clients too.

Have people sign documents standing up too. Turns a potential 1 hour boring convo into them signing standing up, and they bounce in 15 mins. I love it!

Be warned....to get a good architect/draftman's chair to suit got me for about $600-$700 too.

Will have them a long time though. Great investment for me. The company and quality is EXTREMELY HIGH!!

I just put a solid chocolate desktop on it from Ikea, and I have a 24" monitor on it. Really tight set-up!!

I improvised one in my office using some available shelving. I love it. I spend a portion of my day standing and the difference in my energy levels is noticeable. I do sit some of the day still.

I finally set up the desk shown in the first video. The tricky part besides assembling it (some tight screws) is getting the wiring write. You need at least 6 ft DVI/VGA cables for your monitors, 9 ft would be better though. The power cords need to be that long too for the monitors.

Figured out my hangups. The surge protector is directly in the back right under the power source. I also now have a swoopper for when I rest. It makes it difficult to slouch which is a plus. That's where your spine gets weak, and you close of blood flow to limbs. when you stand you tend to dance if you music is playing in the background. The stool fits under the desk too to save space. I think that standing for long enough (several hours at a time) will redevelop atrophied back muscles from sitting, and prevent varicose veins from standing too long. The proper posture does look alpha and sexy when on a woman. I assume it looks good on guys from a female perspective. I saw a patient at work one time sitting with proper posture, bending at the waist. Sort of draws your eye to their ass. Very rare to see the posture US wise. Its more of a slouch.
