Lightbulb Temporary language syndicates
Learning a new language is tough. Like any other skill, it helps when you're doing it with your peers to help support each other. I remember when I learned Spanish in Cordoba with a guy who was trying to mack on the girls like I was. We exchanged lines and kept each other motivated.

Idea: for guys learning the same language, plan a one week trip in the same city where for 4 hours a day you both take classes with a local teacher or school. Then at night you go practice what you learned on the girls.

It would take an organizer to get the logistics going and maybe show up a little early to find a teacher.

For example, I could announce a syndicate for Panama City for one week in September. I would start a thread and then talk to the guys who are interested. Once we iron out details and flights, I'd go a few days early to scope out the schools so that when the other guys come, we'd get started. At night we could all hang and just have fun. Even if it's just two guys, it'd still be better than doing it alone. I think the Ambassador program will facilitate events like this.

I'm pretty disappointed with myself for not getting as far in Russian as I did. If there were a couple guys I could do it with, even for a week, I think it'd be a lot of fun.

Sounds cool.

For the guys at home it would be cool if we had a couple threads in the everything else forum where everyone wrote in the foreign language about game tactics, conversational tactics, rants or whatever. It seems Spanish, Russian, and Portuguese are the big 3 now.

Good idea, this is basically what I did when I went to Spanish school in Bogota last winter, I'd go to classes Monday to Friday from 8-12 then at night me and some people from class would hit up the bars and practice our newly acquired Spanish skills.

If any of you are in Bogota, I can recommend Nueva Lengua Spanish school in Chapinero (they also have schools in Medellin, Cartagena and Panama City), http://www.nuevalengua.com/

Also, while in Bogota I definitely recommend checking out "Gringo Tuesdays" at La Villa in zona rosa (you can search Gringo Tuesdays on facebook). From 6-10pm they have cheap Heinekens and lots of upper class Colombians hang out there to practice English with gringos, easy way to meet women, although quality can be hit and miss. Because its on a weekday, the party peaks around 10-11 and starts to die down after midnight. http://www.mantarayatravel.com/blog/bogo...t-la-villa

I'm planning a trip back to Colombia in August, can't wait!

God damned them all, I was told we'd cruise the seas for American gold, we'd fire no guns-shed no tears, now I'm a broken man on a Halifax pier, the last of Barrett's privateers!

Good idea. Even better than learning on the spot is to have seriously studied some grammar and vocab a week (or more) BEFORE you arrive at your destination. You will be more motivated to put in practice all the stuff you know, and it's lots of fun. You will be able to pick up more vocab while practicing, and be wanting to learn more when you have some time in the coffee shop.

Also a good idea is to take a language course of a week or two - banging co-students is optional. Or do some language exchange, a good excuse to take her to your place.

I like that idea,I'm in. My Russian is only at a basic conversational level but it would be good to be able to practice it whilst talking about interesting topics as opposed to the stuff you have to discuss in a language class.

For me it is always much easier to accomplish something while I have a buddy pushing me. Think this is a good idea.
