I don't attack folks for their religious beliefs, but this crosses the line into cult. The level of brainwashing that must occur to get adult human beings to obey their "messiah," even while he's in prison for life, amazes me...

It's another test of faith for Warren Jeffs' Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints community in Short Creek, Utah. Even though the self-proclaimed prophet Jeffs was convicted of sexually assaulting a 12-year-old and a 15-year-old and sentenced to life in prison, followers stayed loyal, obeying his sexually controlling sermons, preached over the phone from his Texas prison (such as the late 2011 revelation that NO ONE could have sex until his prison walls crumble). Now Jeffs has decreed that only 15 men in a community of thousands are worthy of fathering children, which means that for everyone else, including other married men and their own wives, sex is still off limits.

I'm having a reaction to this story vaguely similar to basilransom's. Think of it this way: If Warren Jeffs' cult has around 10,000 members, of which presumably around 5,000 are men, then his declaration that only fifteen men in the cult are worthy to have sex equals a worthiness rate of about 0.3%. That's actually generous by typical Western female standards. If there are roughly 2.4 billion adult men in the world, then a worthiness rate of 0.3% would mean that around 7.2 million men worldwide were considered worthy to have sex. In reality, I think that the number of men Western women consider truly worthy to have sex--mostly athletes, rock stars, and actors--is far less. By "truly worthy", I mean "given de facto social permission to have extensive promiscuous sex without punishment or shaming".

You might ask, "What about all the Western women who are in relationships with husbands and boyfriends? Don't they consider those husbands and boyfriends truly worthy to have sex, at least in theory--that is to say if those husbands and boyfriends weren't locked into a relationship with them?" The answer is, in a very large number of cases, no. They don't really like or respect those guys that much, they're just tolerating them in exchange for an expectation of the guys' faithfulness.

If you're going to join a religious commune lead by a strong Messianic figure, go with the Oneida Community 1848-1879 under John Humphrey Noyes.

They believed in sex, sex, and more sex. Their form of birth control, "Male Continence", was a little difficult to get the hang of, so postmenopausal women were encouraged to introduce teenage males to sex and teach them the method, providing both with legitimate partners that rarely resulted in pregnancies. Once a man got the hang of it he was allowed to have sex with all the ladies, but he would be chided if he became clingy or had oneitis. It was required the men spread the love around.
