Cell Phone Storage and New York High Schools
This is some interesting shit and a real sign of the times:

Quote:Storing Students' Banned Cell Phones is Big Business in New York

....

The students — who attend the nearly 90 high schools and middle schools in the five boroughs with permanent metal detectors — pay $1 a day to store their phones either in stores or in trucks that park around the buildings. Down the block from The Nation offices on Irving Place, you can see long lines of kids each afternoon from nearby Washington Irving High School waiting to pick up their phones after school from an idling truck.

The cottage industry has become so profitable, it rakes in $22,800 a day from some of the city’s poorest youngsters, whose families choose to shell out the money rather than risk their children’s safety by putting them out of the range of easy communication.

Why can't they just have a locker in the hallways like we did in high school?

For criminals too. These trucks make easy targets because the guys operating the truck probably don't have carry permits (being NYC and all); though I'm sure they'll be pushing for that now. One well-timed hit at the right school, and the perps might walk away with a couple hundred smartphones, which would be very easy to fence on ebay and craigslist.

Next business opportunity: offering insurance to the trucks, which they then offer to the students.

Yeah I don't get this. I agree with the school bureaucrat that the schools shouldn't take on the liability. But don't these kids have lockers?

You also can't have a communal locker, because kids would just steal each other's phones.

When I saw the original post, I thought the government had signed some agreement with the trucks. Sort of like how governments have been leasing parking meters.

Roosh tweeted Matt Taibbi's article on how the parking meter revenue in NYC might be sold off to foreign investors by Bloomberg. It would be funny if Bloomberg sold the rights then fired all the meter maids, so there'd be no revenue. Of course then it'd be impossible to find a space...

Do those trucks also have mysterious old smiling men offering candy inside?

More modern schools have lockers in the halls, but many NYC schools weren't designed that way. Many of them are older buildings. The locker rooms in the gym may have them, but the halls aren't lined with lockers.

Absolutely ridiculous that the schools do not pay for the student's cell phone storage. Growing up in NYC is probably one of the worst places to raise a child.

Phones while they seems indispensable aren't integral to a student's well-being while in school like lunch and textbooks are. They want them, they have to pay for it.

If schools pay for it: Principals would complain they can't afford it to the Board of Ed who will complain to the Chancellor who will go to the Mayor who will go to Legislature to levy a tax which will paid by the parents of the kids who own the phones. Either way, the parent end up paying for the cell storage.
