I wonder if technologies like this actually serve to make humans dumber.

Driving/walking without GPS requires you to make a lot of spatial calculations, use your natural sense of direction, make landmarks for yourself, remember street signs, or if worse comes to worst ask someone for help (I have never done this). You get a tiny feeling of accomplishment when you arrive at your destination without the help of a gadget.

With this device, the world becomes more of a safe, sterile place. Remember what the world was like before cell phones? Where you had to just show up to a place on time and hope that your friend didn't get caught up in something? Now most people would feel somewhat lost without their phone. For me, I don't really mess around with the smartphone features that much, but if I'm in a foreign city you better believe that I'm going to have a local SIM and a contact to reach in case some shit goes down.

How are people going to react when their glasses are broken or stolen? I think gradually they are going to be using the glasses for more and more functions of their lives and become more reliant on them.

All these little things that Glass will do for you is just taking away functions that your brain would normally handle for itself. From personal experience I can tell that my brain takes a little bit of time to warm up if I've just been partying or taking it easy, and then I attempt an intellectually intense project. I think unloading so many functions from your brain to have a computer do them is going to dull your wits.

Don't get me wrong, I think it's a pretty 'cool' innovation. But I think it really is going to serve to make the people who use it dumber, more socially withdrawn, and incapable of making their way around a city technology-free. That's not even looking at the privacy violations that are bound to happen. I mean come on, Google literally seeing and hearing everything that you see and hear?

Yeah I'm sure they would 'respect your privacy'. Until a subpoena comes. Until legislation forces them to keep archives of your activity to catch criminals.

I am fearing this too. I have seen this in myself in the form of auto-correct or the ability to just click on the misspelled word and have an option of all the words the computer thought I was attempting to spell. And I used to be a spelling bee champ when I was a kid, all those 3rd grade girls wanted to share their snacks with me.

I realized it when I constantly misspelled the same word over and over, and still didn't know the correct spelling. I have since starting making a conscious effort to look up the definition of words I don't know or spell wrong.

Something like this was bound to eventually happen, the way technology was rapidly expanding. The most important part for this isn't Google getting the revenues from the glasses, but the services from Google. People will begin to shift to Google's services.. for everything.

If not Google, than Apple. Or Microsoft. Google has an insane amount of resources and they were dedicated to the project so they got there first.


This is the beginning of the end. People are going to become more sheepish and withdrawn from actual social interaction. How will you get away from technology if it's on your face 24/7?

It's sad, really.

But inevitable.

I don't think this will ever take off. I don't see the point of having the internet in your face - when it is just as accesible from your pocket.

GOOGLE needs alot of these hype products - along with the hype surrounding the 'geniuses' who work for them and the amazing work conditions they have. To distract from the fact that they are a giant advertising company pretending to be a technology company - sitting on 80% of the world's internet search revenues. They are a Microsoft style monopoly and need silly shit like this to throw up enough sand to make people forget about this.

Even if this takes off, this won't affect people who live in poorer countries as much, for obvious reasons. Not a solution, but another benefit for those who live in places like South East Asia.

I heard about this like last year. I thought it was an amazing idea at first but after seeing some people's take on it, it really changed my mind. Do you know how dangerous this could be? Idiots(betas) using google glass to watch porn while driving. It sounds like I'm making light of the situation but it's a very serious issue. I don't even have a phone and I'm loving my life. We already have enough auto accidents from texting anyways.

My smart phone broke a while back and I connected an old slider phone. Honestly, I feel liberated and more like a real human being. I can't fuck with it when I'm bored and am forced to be in my own head or socialize with people. Also, like Blunt said, I'm having to map out destinations if it's in a new spot and memorize street names or something to help me find my way there/back on the right freeway. I got lost in some town and had to ask an old guy for directions at a gas station. He said "nobody's asked me for directions in years" haha. I honestly don't know if I wanna get another smart phone. It's scary how much technology can control you and turn your brain into shit. I hate seeing friends and family just buried in their phone instead of living life and checking everything out around them.

I disagree. Poorer countries very quickly absorb and in many cases, leapfrog the technology of wealthier countries.

The takeaway I get from this is that now in addition to oblivious drivers getting hit by vehicles while texting, we'll see oblivious pedestrians being hit by vehicles while wearing these glasses.

Luckily, they'll be like the narrator of this video, so it won't be any major loss.
