A new app launched this weekend that will scan the faces of patrons in 25 bars across the city to determine their ages and genders. Would-be customers can then check their smartphones for real-time updates on the crowd size, average age and men-to-women mix to decide whether the scene is to their liking.

SceneTap was discussed in How to know a Girl-Guy Ratio beforehand back in February. My only comment on the issue was:

Useful, but I see no reason to be overjoyed. Such technology concerns me greatly.

I've used this occasionally in Chicago. While it's generally fairly accurate at describing how crowded a place is and what the girl-guy ratio is, a major limitation is that a lot of bars aren't on the app, and the ones that are tend to be the most well-known spots anyway (with correspondingly bad ratios). Bottom line, it has some usefulness, but until the range of bars included in the app is significantly expanded I wouldn't rely on it to plan a night out.
