So I don't know about you guys, but I'm a fan of a lot of HBO shows, (The Wire, Entourage, East Bound & Down, etc.), however recently the network has been letting me down.

This Sunday they got a new show called "Girls", which from what I can gather is about a chubby, unattractive, mid 20's, hipsterish Jewish chick living in NYC.

The show looks like it's super fucking lame, and only extreme beta-male "manginas" and frumpy 20 something feminist chicks are going to be into it.

Unsurprisingly, Judd Apatow is the executive producer, I've liked some of his movies in the past, but guys on the forum have tuned me into how beta the characters in his movies are.

Today when I was reading the paper sipping coffee at my one of my usual spots, I came across this feature story about the show:

I ended up skimming the article, the author really seemed to dig the show, talking it up saying it was "groundbreaking", and she was the "voice of her generation", blah, blah. The guy sounded like what the RVF would call a "quintessential beta male mangina".

This show does look pretty annoying. It's like a female version of that show with Jonathan Schwartzman and Zach Galifanokis (although, Ted Danson was pretty cool in that show). It's the trend these days: Lifestyles of the Young and Beta.

The interesting thing about Appatow movies, however, is that no matter how beta the characters are, there's always a fair amount of truth shining through. They just tend to paper over it towards the end for the sake of some sort of phony redemption. And this show seems no different. You've got a frumpy-looking SWPL chick, living in the big city and dreaming of success in some "creative" field. She's banging some dude who's not particularly great looking, but seems tall, in good shape and is sufficiently aloof. In other words she's banging some dude who's out of her league and will never commit.

This show basically looks like this generation's version of Sex in the City, except the SITC crowd wanted to be part of some glamorous downtown Manhattan lifestyle. This hipster generation is every bit as status-seeking. It's just that for them, status isn't marrying a banker and getting the Park Avenue penthouse; it's more about snagging some art director/novelist and getting a brownstone in Park Slope.

I'll admit that whenever I see a movie or TV show like this, I always feel a little bad for the girl. Then, of course, I remember that every girl like this, chasing the dudes who will bang them for a while and move on, has some beta friend, maybe two, who would jump for joy at the chance of being her boyfriend. And, to be honest, thank god for 5s, 6s and 7s
who won't "settle." They keep me fed while I'm striving for the 8s and 9s.

A funnier show is on Cinemax, called "The Girls Guide to Depravity." It's supposedly based on some chick's blog, and the two main characters are essentially female players. It's got plenty of nudity and language, and the two stars many not be 10s, but they're decent looking.

Note to the Executive Producer:
Just because you promised some casting couch chick who blew you a couple of times that you would "seriously consider producing her show" it doesn't mean you actually have to do it. Producers lie all the time.

Talking to the Jewish angle:
While you seem to get a lot of lame suff like this showcasing (I would say insulting) Jews in the US you never get simmilar stuff coming out of Israel. I'm not a fan of military conscription, but maybe the two years that Israeli girls have to serve instills some sort of common sense at the same time.

Stuff White People Like. From a blog, and later a book, of the same name by a Candian SWPL whose name I forget. Makes lighthearted fun of the taste and behaviour of certain classes of White people. Apparently if you go to either Williamsburg (NY) or Portland (OR), post up on any street corner and just observe the people walking by you will understand forever what SWPL means.

Often used as a mild insult, but the insulters forget that SWPL's are one of the very few North American demographics that are not majority overweight/obese. So, be nice to SWPL's since you may well be hitting on one before the day is done.

It's both. The blog was a pun.

I downloaded and bore through the first two episodes out of sheer curiosity. There is not a single redeeming feature to this show. Other shows like Gossip Girl at least have attractive cast members (Blake Lively anybody?), the Girls cast has only one hot girl (the bitchy one) and the main character is just plain ugly, fat and tattooed to ad to her hipster cred. You'd expect chick shit like this to at least have an attractive cast...

The show is not funny at all. The "drama" is plain boring. It's basically a self-deprecating "hipster Sex and the City" set amongst Brooklyn's brownstones yet oddly the cast is all WASP or Jewish. The main character is an archetype all of us are familiar with: The intelligent and socially awkward girl whose always over-intellectualizing and ranting which only ads to their social awkwardness. Making this girl into the star of the show takes crap to a whole new level. The funniest line in the whole thing was when the bitchy girl said the only reason she moved to New York was the infamous musical "Rent". Out of an hours worth of content that was the only time I laughed. The style and crappy humour is pointed straight at the nerdy, awkward and hipster type as opposed to "mainstream" girls. The days in the loves of Single White East Coast Progressive Liberals is not entertaining in real life nor is it entertaining on a HBO show. If "Girls" becomes the next big thing I might go car bomb a vintage clothing store filled with sluts wearing grandma sweaters. Seriously. I weep for humanity.

Yeah, what was written here is true; super ugly lead, not very funny, the most annoying characters ever...BUT it is one of the best vindication of game principles on a mainstream TV and I've been following it due to that. And it is a quite realistic portrayal of how today's twenty-something (especially the hipstery ones) think and act. Good analysis here:

i just watched the first episode of this show while eating lunch. i was nearly sick to my stomach. the series starts with a fat english major whining and being entitled because her parents cut her off. it goes on to perfectly describe the average hipster girl (at least in my city, outside of the university). everything they talk about is so banal, vapid and annoying i don't know if I can watch it any more. The funny thing though is that watching it after reading "red pill" stuff makes it seem more like a horror movie than a comedy. This IS what 20 something girls are, this IS what 20 something guys are. I laughed at the sex and the city cold read, but other than that the show is just depressing me. At least I have the clarity to realize that I have power over things in my life. Its fully possible to either avoid or reform these girls.

The dudes are so pathetic too. I have lost all hope in my generation.

I'll watch the next episode, but I have a feeling the writers are familliar with our way of thinking. just now a boyfriend dominates his fat/ugly girlfriend calling her a career woman mockingly. Maybe people will see this as a wakeup call.

I've been enjoying this show, I have to say. It's well-written and acted, funny, and seems to be very real in showing life for American 20-somethings in 2012. Actually I'm only guessing about that as I'm neither American nor in my twenties (thank you God).

The women are repulsive, unfeminine and entitled, and the guys in their lives are either weeblish betas who get dumped, or jerkish alphas, who as this is a female's fantasy show, are actually deep troubled individuals who can be reeled in by a fat obnoxious bitch.

I saw two things on the show which I've seen mentioned on this forum: women saying "I have to take a dump" (you go girl!) and wearing pajamas in public. These are apparently minor trends. Fucking pathetic.

This show is quite good. It's very realistic, and is definitely a peek inside the mind 20-something girls (and guys).

FWIW, the main girl actress is also the writer & director of all the episodes. That's a helluva accomplishment at 26, and pretty damn alpha, even if the show is her self-victimization.

The character who is the "animal" fuckbuddy of the main character is pretty awesome. I'm learning new things from him. Check out the first 2 minutes of Episode 2. It's great. First he tells her "you're a dirty little whore. I'm going to send you home to your parents covered in cum. He's fucking the shit out of & choking her her and then demands that she ask him permission everytime she wants to cum, even if she's at home and touching herself. Then he blows his load on her and says, "uhh, so u want a gatorade or something?" hahahahahaha

I'm totally doing that.

It is pretty realistic, when u are bored it is not a bad show. Of course the chicks are kind of fat and look like an average american. One of the girl with beta BF is kind of hot.

We need some of the film/TV industry connected guys here to start up a show that demonstrates acceptable behaviours. We could call it "alpha," and it would cause the greatest outcry from butthurt femicunts ever.

Dude, these people who run that blog are truly horny sluts, they don't care for relationship and it is all the fucking, strategies to keep the fucking going, self-promotion. Man, they are like players who care less about game plans and more about the sex. Every story is sex, sex, and getting more sex. I bet if HBO made a show about Rooshv, Feminist will call it chauvinist, while a show about girls fucking around will be empowerment.

Just checked it out. Good show. Good portrayal of alphas vs betas, and the frivolity of girls.
