No way, it's dry and dirty. If it's still wet enough to eat, you should consider buying another machine. I did hear you can use it in some meals but that's beyond my kitchen skills.

I'm using the Hamilton Beach Big Mouth, so yeah..it is kinda wet still. I'm going to buy an Omega J8006 and give the Big Mouth to my brother.

Price compare to the 8004 before you buy. The difference is color, and I got my 8004 for $60 less than the 8006.

Thanks for the tip. At the moment the 8006 (black and chrome) is $231.70 on Amazon.

8004 is $248.

Guess it depends on various sales.

Oh, and I juiced a beet today. It definitely put a pep in my step.

RE: Health: Juicing
I think I'm going to implement some juice fasts into my lifestyle. I have a few pounds that I want to quickly go away. I'm doing starting strength and I am concerned about losing strength and muscle but I think fat loss is more important. I think a 7 day juice fast every other week will help move things along.

Anyone have some tips or experience with this? I want to optimize fat loss with the juice fast but do not want to lose my gainz.

I'm thinking maybe a semi-fast where all of my protein is from protein powder and then all remaining calories from juice. Maybe throw in some BCAAs into the juice before a workout too.

Thoughts?

Continue to lift weights like a mad man.

Continue to get enough protein from high quality sources like eggs, lean meats, beans, nuts, high quality protein powder, etc.

Drink as much juice as you want. (mostly vegetable juice mixed with a little fruit)

Cut out all unnecessary sugar, alcohol, sweets, sauces, spreads, etc.

If you need a little carb energy, eat only high quality carbs in moderation. (oatmeal, brown rice, yams, etc)

If you follow these guidelines strictly, you will gain/maintain muscle and also lose fat.

As you said -- "semi-fast".

"Fasting" is great but often leads to decreased muscle mass.

So, for you, I say, more weights, protein and juice and less of everything else.

Look at how much of a caloric deficit you'd need to run to lose a few pounds. You probably don't need to fast and instead just drop into the 1200-1500 calorie range, assuming you're an average sized man. Eat one normal meal a day and then juice. While you can drop the pounds on a fast, the main benefit of a fast IMO is to give parts of your digestive system a break and purge your body.

I just purchased a near new Omega 8005 Juicer from a Craigslist seller.

A youtube video suggested that larger beets are significantly more bitter than smaller ones. Is this true?

Usually the soil a vegetable was grown in affects the taste more than anything. If you have a problem with bitterness, a lime can help balance the flavor. Or you can go embrace the bitter and improve the flavor with tomato and hot sauce. You can still get the workout benefits of beet juice with a little something else in it to improve flavor.

@Bear Hands - Thank you. Smile

Just wanted to share my two day's worth of experiences with the Omega 8005 and juicing in general.

First, the juicer is phenomenal. Set-up takes 3 minutes. Clean-up takes 4 minutes. And juicing itself is either super quick, (if I limit myself to carrots, celery, parsley, and other vegetables that already fit), or not-at-all annoying (if I add vegetables like collard greens, cucumbers, or beets that must be trimmed down to size).

Secondly, I like juicing a lot and would offer the following tips: (1) Hot sauce is a god-send. Less than 10 drops of it in 2.5 cups of juice makes a big difference. (2) Certain vegetables have neutral flavors, and can be used to cancel out bitter flavors. Cucumber is an excellent neutral vegetable; so is celery. Carrots aren't neutral, but they have good flavor. (3) My juicer handles stem-my vegetables like parsley and cilantro very easily, but they should be juiced first. Always end with a pulpy vegetable, like carrots, to force the stem-my vegetables through the machine. (4) I juiced a very large organic beet (including the beet leaves) and didn't notice any major bitterness. If anything, the organic beets I bought were sweeter than the non-organic ones I purchased from a different store.

Thirdly, someone warned that the first couple days of juicing could produce....*ahem*.....explosive reactions in your digestive system. Sure enough, I was driving north in Manhattan during the most recent snowstorm, when I was plagued with sensations that I never knew existed. Two hours later, (and after lots of profanity), I was able to evacuate on a rest stop toilet near the George Washington Bridge. Big Grin

How strong of a juice does cilantro make? I enjoy cilantro but it's a rather strong flavor to me. Can you give me an idea of the proportion you're using it in compared to the rest of the juice?

Yes, explosive shitting!

That is one of the primary benefits of juicing. The fresh juice works to break up all the caked on food matter that lines the walls of our digestive tract.

Juice literally flushes fat away!

(02-23-2015 10:22 PM)MMX2010 Wrote:  sensations that I never knew existed.

Juice contains powerful enzymes, nutrients, etc. As I said above, these things work to dissolve the lingering fat and food matter in our intestines. As these nutrients take effect and go to work, we can feel them working in out belly.

The juice activates and stimulates our digestive fluids.

This allows us the shit out and piss put the impurities in our body.

Cilantro and parsley are very strong. I feel that celery juice, cucumber juice, and carrot juice are 3x stronger than eating raw celery, cucumber, or carrots. But cilantro and parsley are like 10x stronger.

The cilantro juice in my drinks is always less than 2% of the total volume, but the cilantro is the first thing you smell and taste when you drink.

My first time juicing grapefruit in my juices this week.

Woke up in the middle of the night to a volcano-like eruption commencing.

Afterwards, all was well. Felt amazing.

RE: Health: Juicing
I've had a (don't laugh) Jack la Lane juicer for several years. When I was living in California I juiced pretty much daily. I've been off of it for a while, but have been meaning to start back up in concert with my new lifting regimen since relocating back from China to the US.

My review of that juicer (basicly, this one) is as follows:

Extraction - very good
Ease of use - good, with a wide opening for feeding in vegetables and fruit (this has to do with how small items must be cut before feeding them into the juicer)
Clean up - poor, lots of time to clean the blades, tough to get them sparkling for the anal retentive, fairly high number of parts - 5 minutes to clean.

There is clearly a wealth of information in the thread. My two cents on juicing is that for vegetable juicing, depending on what you buy and the relative expense of vegetables (or whatever else you choose to juice), spend more on a juicer that is efficient (meaning it extracts as much juice as possible). If you live in a place where veggies are expensive, this should be a priority. If you live somewhere where you get fresh veggies cheaply, perhaps you care less about this - though eventually, an expensive juicer (relatively) that is more efficient will ultimately pay for itself.

For the guys wondering about juicing vs smoothies vs. eating fruit, my opinion would be that all three have value independently. Juicing is the best way to superload vitamins, living enzymes and phytochemicals, but it removes the fiber from the vegetables. Smoothies are good ways to keep the fiber and still get benefits, and fiber is strongly correlated to health. Still, smoothies cannot compare in density of nutrition, while juices must be more moderated as to what should be included because absorption is much quicker than smoothies of sugars (for various reasons, largely involving the way fiber impacts digestion). I do use some sweeter elements in juicing, such as carrots and green/red apples, but the core of my juicing is green leafy vegetables with cucumber, celery, tomato (which is to me delicious and underutilized)...also keep in mind that mixing up colors is to your benefit - different colors of fruit and veggies indicate different types of phytochemicals and living enzymes, and the variety is ultimately very beneficial.

With respect to the gastric interruptions, they're temporary. Once your digestive system adjusts, it will go away. Some ascribe this to the initial detox effect of juicing (one of the great benefits). I've not seen proof of that, but from experience, those episodes should last, at max, a week or two.

Great thread.

Ginger is a good ingredient for the mornings, as it creates alertness and awareness. Many chinese (where ginger is super-heavily used) avoid ginger in the evenings because the perceived increased brain activity is though to keep you awake.

I went a little crazy making two juices for the weekend. First one involved too much ginger, four clementine oranges, a bunch of celery, five carrots, a beet, a little lemon juice, and a cucumber. First sip felt like my mouth was on fire but I forced myself to keep drinking until I drank a quarter of it.

Cleaned me out.

I find that to be a myth.

I juice 5 pounds of carrots about 3-4 times a week (comes out to a liter for each 5 pounds of carrots) and I don't notice a glow at all.

I've checked juicing websites which seem to state that one 4-8 oz a day will do it. Though I'm not juicing carrots daily, I'm drinking far more than that over a course of a week and I don't see a difference.

I juice carrots mainly because I enjoy the taste, but I'm thinking of cutting it back because of the sugar and focusing more on celery.

Yep... Carrots are generally pretty high in sugar, and I would NOT make them a weekly habit. In my humble bumble opinion, once or twice a month may be o.k. for carrots for those who want to have a little variety and if these guys are NOT overdoing various sugars (or sugar-converting foods) in other aspects of their diet.
