Its a tough call as to whether you work hard now and travel in 10-15 years, or find ways to travel now perhaps at the expense of earning power.

To my mind, it's fair enough to defer serious long term travel in order to get your finances in order. I think what isnt a good idea though is completely deferring, i.e. the "be a banker, work my ass off, make a mil before 35, then retire". The human mind/body doesnt work well on those timescales where you're punishing yourself for years for a distant better future. If you value travel/adventure, you gotta have at least SOME of it along the way IMO, even if it's just a couple of short stints per year.

I think the ideal life in your youth would be to work hard with something like 10-12 weeks holiday a year. I'd happily earn a fraction less for 3 months off every year. You might even end up more productive overall, anyway - you use the downtime while you travel in 3 months to pound books, learn languages etc.

I think something like that would be a great balance. Because when you earn more with less free time, you just burn it on material crap as a poor substitute for your lack of freedom - see the spending habits of lawyers/bankers in the rat race. It all goes towards cars/ apartments in better places / clothes/ expensive dinners and overpriced nights out, in the mediocre city you're enslaved to. Crazy.

I'm 27 and have spent the past 4 years being fairly irresponsible (so I'm told anyway) and travelling a lot, big 5-6 month trips to Australia, South East Asia (x2), South America, Europe as well as some shorter ones. Eventually I'll have to get my head down, make some solid cash that comes in regularly and sort out something more permanent in regards to travel / living abroad. I aim after this trip is over to work on the location independent lifestyle scenario, have a lot of different ideas and need to see if they work out. Certainly don't want to get stuck in the 9-5 routine, not for me at all.

I'm not one for working hard now to travel later in life as I can't guarantee I'll be here later in life. I don't want to die having just worked all my days and not done the things I wanted to.

I wouldn't trade them for the world and yes in the periods when I'm working the 9-5 in between travel it destroys me. Probably even moreso because I know what there is out there in the big wide world. Having had those experiences of travel and spending 6 months just living it up makes me resent the work even more than those who haven't I think. Hence why I need something more sustainable and longterm where I can balance things out a bit more.

I wouldn't be in a huge hurry to start traveling right away. Get to a good spot in the U.S. and smash the pussy there, hone your skills, and prepare for future trips. Traveling costs money, and going somewhere and striking out stings. There's nothing wrong with backpacker route, but going out w/ an extra 30K in the bank feels great. Financial stress sucks when your on the road.

I saw a dozen countries by the age of 22. This was accomplished by career hacking into a job that offered travel. I made mistakes back then. Now I'm in my mid 30's and smash younger pussy overseas. I still look 28, especially to Latinas, so I'm not pressed for time. Besides, the Phils will always be there to bang 22 y.o. tail, even when I'm 64.

My advice to you young cats is to concentrate on your career first. Concentrate on a job that lands you overseas, or has at 30 days holiday, or work your way into contracting, where you can bank money over a short period and take the same amount of time off.

I took an overseas hiatus from 22-28. That era was spent trying to get my shit together, and it paid off when I got the call to work in the ME. Now I make a lot of money and don't sweat blowing 6K in Dubai. Actually, I was paid full salary to go on R&R, and essentially broke even during that 2 week period. No harm, no foul.

I don't regret not traveling overseas in my mid-20's. It was worth the wait. Now I have the options of a career in China, Brazil, the OZ, and UAE. Traveling is one thing, but making money in these exotic locations? Priceless.

I'm far more refined and skilled with women now, and pull WAY more tail than if I was traveling at 24.

By teacher, I'm not talking about "I teach English in Korea" type of teacher, I'm talking about "I have a master's Degree and I make 65K/year" public school teacher. I can't think of another profession I'd rather do. I help children, I make good money, and I'm off 13 weeks a year.

From a game standpoint, I find having to stand up in front of 120 teenagers every day who are judging your every word and move, to be an incredible confidence builder in terms of interacting with others. In addition, I get to take 3-4 small vacations each year, and live in another country for 2 months a year meeting beautiful women, and interesting people. There's nothing quite like living with reckless abandon in another country, only to check your bank account to find more money than you started your trip with!

In 2010 I checked out the World Cup in SA. Last summer I knocked around France, Switzerland and Italy in the Alpine regions, before heading off to EE for 4 weeks. This summer I have a summer filled with Thailand, Cambodia and China. I'm thinking spending some time in the Serengeti in the summer of '13, before backpacking SA and Brazil for WC2014. The best part about teaching is that I make a pretty significant salary compared with most of the world, allowing me to splurge when I want abroad. As many will attest, you can live like a backpacker abroad, or you can take advantage of your money and live like a relative king.

I know here in the UK teachers are always complaining about strict government directives, excessive testing and the high after-hours workload of admin (marking, assessing, extra training) etc that they are forced to go through - how does it compare there?

Yea, I teach here in the states. I've learned to distance myself from the directives, and the bureaucratic non-sense that comes along with the job. Do what they say, but put your own style on it, and you'll be fine. The work during the year is intense, no doubt about it. I'm writing a thesis for graduate school right now, and I'll spend the better part of the rest of my day lesson planning for the week. But my salary is good, and I enjoy a "mini-retirement" each summer. Your job literally ends on the last day of school, and doesn't have to be thought about until the first day of school.

The first couple of years on the job are tough, and frankly overwhelming, as evidenced by a 40% attrition rate among teachers in the first 4 years on the job. Even if I wanted to leave, which I couldn't imagine doing, the type of skills I have acquired translate into so many other fields if you market yourself correctly. (I am creative on a daily basis, I work under strict deadlines, my job is contingent of the tangible improvement of a certain percentage of students, I'm punctual, organized, confident in presenting information to an audience, etc.)

I've been asked by my administration if I'd like to move up in the future to a more supervisory role, but my answer has been evasive because I really don't want to move up. Is that beta of me? I think not, because why deal with less vacation, more added responsibility, and less interaction with the children, when I'm perfectly happy in my spot for now.

Many of you on this board seem committed to excellence and are well articulated in your posts. I encourage my fellow younger cats to pursue teaching. We could use some more well-traveled, educated, and cultured men in my profession to make an impact on future generations.

I'm 19 and I would say 70% of my money goes on travel. I earn close to minimum wage but still manage to go to a new country once a month or so for about 5 days each time. Since October I have hit up Iceland, Czech, Amsterdam and Sweden. Heading off to Zagreb next week.

For me, these trips are invaluable. I spend my whole time abroad totally focused on game.. I guess you could say it's my own personal bootcamp, except I don't pay anyone and I teach myself. Wake up, read a little game material, daygame, take a nap, read a little more, nightgame. I love it.

This is just another one of those "what are your alternatives" posts.

If your alternative is slaving away at an accounting job making $30K a year, it's a no brainer to get the hell out of the USA and have fun.

If your alternative is to make $500K+ a year you'd be a damn fool to leave that on the table to go hang out with kids in hostels.

The number one excuse I hear from people when they see alternative two is "You'll get sucked into the lifestyle"... That's another load of crap because if you have strong game and are in shape you won't be spending more than a few g's a month to get laid with slutty American girls.

I'd bet anyone the well traveled guy is going to lose to a millionaire at 30 with strong game every day of the week. Everyone has to choose their path based on their options/skillset. Once you hang out with one, just one, boss rich guy with game you know for sure what the truth is, problem is most guys never see it go down. It's absolutely absurd, girls will pretty much be ready to rape you if you're in amazing shape + strong people skills + rich, that's like an auto orgasm for all walks of women.

Come to think of it the real pathetic part about the blue pill is they usually fail at both, 1. don't see better women abroad and 2. usually never get legitimate jobs/businesses/careers.

"short-term loss, long-term gain" is the best way I would put it. Spending all of your time and money on traveling might seem fun between 20-25 but there is no way of avoiding the monetary issue. I think that issue should be addressed first because you need money to supplement your lifestyle, there is just no way around it.

Without money, there is no way you can travel, so unless you have obtained passive income or have a self-sustained business, you cannot maximize your travel experience. Besides that window of travelling young is only a maximum of 7-8 years, my advice is if you do not have passive income of a self-sustained business, try to set up a "base" where you can go back to everytime you come back from travel; no one wants to return to a shitty boss and a crappy basement apartment.

Bottom line:Get your lifestyle shit handled.

I think the major theme should be knowing what you want. If you don't know what you want, you can't plan accordingly. If you truly want to live in other countries then get the skills that will allow you to work remotely.

At that point, it is all cashflow.

If you want to retire early, then you set plans to do that which may mean staying in the western world until you get the coin to retire.

I do the mix. When I was studying, I spent almost two years studying abroad with scholarships. Then I worked for nearly two years, and did the Asian trip (which was 6 months already, and its time to settle down soon).
The only regret is limited budget here, I would love to have a proper bankroll. So next time I make sure to have at least 3 K USD/month to travel without making stupid sacrifices (dilemmas like should I go diving, and then stay in the dorm for a week, or skip diving and have a pad to bring the girl into). But definitely it's a good experience, and I'm glad I did that instead of for example buying a new car (as many of my friends did).
Travelling is a part of my lifestyle, and can never be skipped. BTW I'm 28 now.

I think this really depends on your circumstances. Someone who has a lot of potential would be ill-advised to travel and spend years teaching english for example...but someone who really isn't likely to have a ton of success may be advised to travel while young. For example, someone on 50k a year is probably never retiring before 40 unless he lives on shoe strings or some combination of fluke/inheritance / living in bumfuck nowhere. So the whole retiring early thing probably isn't realistic for them. (Obviously if you have continuous cash flow post retirement thats different).

TRAVEL NOW, im 24 and although I am highly optimistic there is no guarantee I'll see 40.

I see no reason why you can't travel in your 20's and accumulate cash. At my age I've been to almost every major city in the U.S and a few Caribbean islands.

Now that I'm approaching 25 I want to at MINIMUM go to a new country every year.

So when I'm 30 I will have been to every US city worth traveling to and at MINIMUM 5 countries.

The thing about it is I am sure I'll be in a better financial situation when I am 30+ then I am now, but I can always revisit the places I've been to when I have more cash.

Look at it as reconnaissance, its better to have been somewhere in your 20s and revisit when you have a bigger bankroll than going for the first time when your 30+. I think you'll get more out of the experience.
With the travel deals available today I see no logical reason to put off traveling.

I.e summer 2014 I intend.on going to brazil for the world cup. Sure I'll have more to spend when I'm 30+ but why would that stop me from going to brazil now!?

I see no reason to wait.

Never traveled in my life am in my mid 20's i am always either to busy working or too busy farming just dont have the time.maybe some day i will. i would love to but would not even know where to start.
