Two members of an all-girl punk band have been jailed and may face stiff prison sentences for a prank-like performance inside Moscow’s main Orthodox cathedral last month.

The harsh treatment of the musicians seemed to signal a rising intolerance for dissent in the wake of Sunday’s presidential elections which won Vladimir Putin a third term as Russian president.

It is also a test of sorts for radical feminism – a fringe ideology in macho Russia, yet one which seems to be catching on amid three months of protests against the Kremlin.

In a separate incident, three other feminist activists were in administrative detention after a topless protest on Sunday in the polling station where Mr Putin voted and shouting, “I’ll steal for Putin!” and trying to make off with ballot boxes. They said they represented Ukrainian feminist activist group Femen, which also stripped off in front of the Christ the Saviour cathedral on December 9.

While the Kremlin has not reacted to the Femen protest, Mr Putin has apparently become involved in the fallout from the stunt by the punk band, known as Pussy Riot. "Negative," was how Mr Putin’s spokesman Dmitry Peskov described Mr Putin’s reaction to the scandal in an interview with Dozhd internet television channel. “Honestly speaking, as far as what happened in the cathedral, there's no other way than ‘disgusting’ to describe it, with all the consequences that implies,” he said.

The band first gained notoriety performing in Red Square on a cold January afternoon with the song “Putin wet his pants” performed in dayglo balaclavas and mini dresses. Video of the Pussy Riot performance went viral with 568,000 page views on Youtube as of Thursday.

They followed the stunt on February 21 with another one this time inside Christ the Saviour cathedral, Moscow’s largest church and site of most official religious functions. Five members of the group filmed themselves dancing in front of the cathedral altar, playing electric guitars and singing a hymn-like punk song, “Holy Mother, Blessed Virgin, drive Putin out!”

“Black cassock, gold epaulettes! The congregation bows, crawling to him! The Ghost of Freedom in heaven / Gay Pride is sent to Siberia in chains” goes one representative line.

While they managed to escape the cathedral without being arrested, several members of the band were detained at the weekend, though all but two were released pending trial. A number of bloggers have signed an internet petition asking for leniency for the two, both of whom are single mothers, according to Russian media reports. If convicted of “hooliganism”, they face maximum prison sentences of seven years, according to officials quoted by official news service Ria Novosti.

On Thursday, about 20 protesters stood outside Moscow police headquarters calling for the release of the two women. “They are mothers and have left children at home,” said Konstantin, a demonstrator from opposition group Solidarity holding a sign saying, “Mama should be at home”.

Orthodox church representatives said the church leadership itself did not want the women to be imprisoned. Vladimir Legoida, head of the information service of the Moscow synod of the church, said, “Church officials have more than once said they do not support the idea of a real prison sentence in this case, but call instead for social condemnation.”

“Even the Bolsheviks in their time did not allow themselves such sacrilege, which was demonstrated during this so called ‘punk service’,” he told the respected gazeta.ru online newspaper.

Memories in Moscow appear to be short, however. Christ the Saviour Cathedral in its original incarnation was blown up by Stalin in 1932 and turned into a swimming pool. It was rebuilt in 1996.

Vic, I understand where you are coming from, however, I am afraid you are being misled. I don't understand why this represents the "complete dissolution of the rule of law". What these girls did was wrong and failure to punish it will just invite more of the same behavior. They should be punished. This is how it all starts and as you can see it was influenced from outside of Russia (one of the girls was a Canadian resident).

Western feminism is a cancer. Russia has decided that they are not willing to let in this caner to spread in their culture. I applaud them for it. So much of what we here about in Russia when they arrest dissidents have to due with western funded NGO's (so called Non-Governmental Organizations) and other organizations infiltrating their system to undermine it. Then our media covers it under the pretext of their "authoritarian regime" and lack of democracy.

Take for example, the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, who "describes itself as a non-profit, non-partisan policy institute 'working to defend free nations against their enemies'. It was founded shortly after the September 11, 2001 attacks to address what it regards as the 'threat facing America, Israel and the West'." What a lovely democratic NGO, of course headed by James Woolsey, former director of the CIA. They would never support dissident groups to undermine Russia.

Or, take a look at the Soros Foundation. "Soros Foundation is one of a network of national foundations, mostly in Central and Eastern Europe, which fund volunteer socio-political activity, created by George Soros, international financier and self-proclaimed philanthropist, and coordinated since early 1994 by a management team called the Open Society Institute." Have a look at Open Society Institute's "Russia Project." This is the west funding dissidents in Russia to undermine their system.

"Intended programs (of Soros foundation) include 'the education of librarians and others; expansion of a free press, Internet, and e-mail communication; publishing; human rights; arts and culture; and social, legal, and economic reform'. You can read that last part I highlighted as women's rights, homosexual rights, minority rights, immigrant rights, multiculturalism, etc.

Have a look at this Guardian article, titled "US campaign behind the turmoil in Kiev," which illustrates just how the United States does it.

Take a look at Soros Foundation and U.S. Influence in relation to Color Revolutions. "A significant source of funding for the Rose Revolution was the network of foundations and NGOs associated with Hungarian-American billionaire financier George Soros ... Soros spent $42 million ramping-up for the overthrow of Shevardnadze." You can read more under the Rose Revolution section titled Funding from Soros-related organizations.

Organizations such as:

The National Endowment for Democracy, which is a "U.S. non-profit organization that was founded in 1983 to promote democracy. It is funded primarily through an annual allocation from the U.S. Congress, within the budget of USAID, the U.S. agency for development assistance, which is part of the U.S. State Department."

The International Republican Institute "an ideologically right-wing organisation, funded by the United States government, that conducts international political programs, sometimes called 'democratization programs'." Oh, so if you don't want United States "democratization programs" and you arrest their agents, then like Russia you have no respect for the rule of law or democracy. Oh, and senator John McCain sits on this organizations board of directors.

The National Democratic Institute for International Affairs is "an (tax payer funded - Department of State) organization created by the United States government by way of the National Endowment for Democracy (NED) to channel grants for furthering democracy in developing nations." On their board of advisors is Madeline Albright, former US Secretary of State, and John Wolfensohn, 9th president of the World Bank.

Freedom House "is a U.S.-based non-governmental organization (NGO) that conducts research and advocacy on democracy, political freedom and human rights." Go to their website and check out their "leadership." I just clicked the first one, William H. Taft IV, and here is a brief excerpt "His long service in government includes serving as the Deputy Secretary of Defense, the U.S. Permanent Representative to NATO, and as chief legal advisor to the State Department."

After seeing all this, can you really say that Russia is cracking down on dissident groups? Or are they defending their sovereignty and culture from foreign influence. Don't get me wrong, I am no fan of Russian leadership. They are a corrupt security state run by a former KGB agent. However I think that their actions should be seen in terms of the big picture that is going on.

Edit: It is not nice to live under any authoritarian regime. Just ask the Occupy Wall street protesters who got beaten and arrested and ask these foolish, manipulated girls once they get out of a terrible Russian jail for a few years. How much exactly of this sort of thing is funded from outside the country in a big geo-political game? We will never know.

I don't like feminism anymore than the rest of you, but cheering a corrupt dictator for suppressing a freedom that many of us consider a birth right is kind of extreme, don't you think? Their brand of feminism is a result of boredom and the youthful need to rebel. It's shit they'll likely grow out of. People are mistaking it for the institutionalized feminism that we have in the west, the kind that exists thanks to the swarms of beta males who enable it.

The bigger problem is that it seems that if you say something Putin doesn't like, you get to spend a couple of years in a Russian jail which apparently haven't improved much since the Soviet days. Silencing your critics by forcefully abusing your power is never a good thing. Especially when your critics are pretty harmless.

Punished they should be yes. By a court of law under the rule of law. Not from Putin holding a press conference and declaring what he thinks the punishment should be. If that is not the arbitrary rule of a dictator I don't know what is.

But you have it backwards. Of course a "corrupt security state" will try to defend itself from foreign influence and keep itself in power. How is this in any way a mitigating circumstance?

The "attacks" on the Russian state are ultimately powered by interests under the boot of the regime. Regardless of funding, human resources is in the end the most important factor. If Russia didn't suffer under the repression of its leaders then there would be little fodder to mount these "attacks" with. Democracies are mostly impervious to these kinds of attacks due to the fact that they allow diversity of opinion and expression.

First of all, I like to call human beings "people" not "human resources." I have always found the term "human resources" to be a degrading phrase used by corporations and the power elite to describe others as less than human. In fact, corporations used to have "personnel" departments instead of HR departments. A subtle but important difference.

I partially disagree that the "attacks" on the Russian state are powered by interests under the boot of the regime. Certainly democracies are not immune to this type of thing. People are easily manipulated. Do Russian women suffer so greatly? Did American women in the 1950s/1960s? On a side note, I disagree with outright sexual harassment in the Russian workforce, but it is polar opposite here in the west and men suffer greatly. Ultimately foreign influences are seeking to disrupt their culture, sovereignty and to undermine their power, and are funding a few disgruntled people to do it. This is not some organic movement in my opinion. It is a science, how to covertly destabilize a society. Hell, the Russians practically invented it.

All this talk of "Freedom of expression" is bullshit. If they did the same thing at any of those other sites which represent the holiest places of worship they would be plunged into a concrete hole in prison or killed on site.

That's right. She announced the verdict. Putin however called it in advance. He did call for leniency but that's hardly an excuse when expressing himself as a leader of state on an ongoing case. He has not been equally "generous" when disposing of prior associates and contenders to the throne such as Boris Berezovsky, Mikhail Khodorkovsky, Alexander Litvinenko and other vocal opponents. These people are all dead, in jail or in exile.

The same courts do happen to be quite lenient when it comes to sentencing the killers of critical journalists however.

But if you know ANYTHING about Russian you already know this and I'm surprised we're even having a discussion where Putin's judical virtue is being defended. Of course you can just dismiss all this as the fabrications of western media. But that means you are taking the words of a quasi-dictator over most of the rest of the world's free press. Instant tin foil hat alert.

This is all interesting, but ultimately anecdotal and philosophical. You are also just repeating points I've already addressed in a rambling manner. Saying the same thing twice does not make it true.
