The comments on the articles I've seen on this topic have convinced me that when it comes to body image and sexuality, westerners are actually delusional. I mean really and truly delusional.

I think this applies most clearly to Americans. When I read the top comments on predominantly American sites like HuffPo, I see nothing but delusion and fattie-defending from both men and women. At HuffPo or almost any American site (Yahoo, etc), all of the top comments almost without exception on articles like these are pro-fat.

I find similar articles on English sites like the Daily Mail, and while there is plenty of positive "fatitude" over there I certainly see many more commenters willing to call a spade a spade, and comments that point out the obvious (ex: she is fat, this is unhealthy, we should not insult her but perhaps we should also not promote this) actually often become the top rated ones. The level of delusion over in the UK seems lower than it is in America, though still significantly higher than it ought to be. Levels of delusion appear to decline even further elsewhere in Europe, and fall pretty far once you get out of the Western world altogether. Americans are by a wide margin the ones most convinced that fat is right.

Then I saw this today:



This thing has over 6000 likes on facebook. Some chick who recently graduated from my school (who isn't even overweight) shared it.

I mean, look at what she's saying: "I love food and hate exercise." Who in their right mind thinks this is an idea to support or promote? I understand the notion that not everyone can be as thin as Giselle Bundchen and not everyone should, but why on Earth does going to the other extreme in this manner seem rational to anyone? How can anyone promote this? Can they seriously not see how going to the other extreme is not a good idea and will just create another problem?

And then there are the false dichotomies: "I'd rather weigh a ton and do an amazing album than look like Nicole Richie and do a shitty album."
And then everyone else in the comments jumps on the bandwagon with this type of logic: "Yeah, I'd rather her look like this than some stick insect! Go Adele!" As if there are no healthy body types in between anorexic and obese.

Because everyone knows there are only two choices in life: be anorexic like this, or be obese. There is no in between. There is no way to lose weight, still be healthy and still make great music.

This foolishness is driving me crazy, man. I'm really starting to wonder if everyone really is off kilter in this place. I mean, the girl who shared this photo and promoted it is not only not-overweight, she's got two elite Ivy League schools on her resume. Supposedly intelligent people are getting behind completely nonsensical crap like this.

Then they come around and wonder why America's life expectancy is so low relative to other developed nations (richest nation on earth = 36th highest life expectancy, tied with the likes of Cuba), why rates of diabetes/heart disease and other ailments are going up, and why our society doesn't do more to promote healthy living.

I mean, for fuck's sake people: you cannot incentivize weight loss in your society when you're making a concerted effort to say "No, its ok! Your big "curvy" body is beautiful! Everyone is beautiful just the way they are! Don't feel pressure to conform!" You can't encourage AND discourage weight loss at the same time.

Her aim in life is never to be skinny? Kind of a short-sighted way of thinking there, considering as a 'musician', longevity is your friend and as a fat bitch, she's basically shaving 15 years off her life.

And don't bullshit me with having no time for exercise. Bitch please. You know what a 23 year old female has to do to keep in good shape? Eat healthy, run 3-4 times a week and do yoga a couple times a week...that's it.

The "I don't have time" excuse is the default excuse for not exercising. People make time for what they really want, or for what is really important. Celebs can always carve out time if they want to, and celebrity trainers are always looking to add another notch to their rep. Adele essentially admitted she's lazy, and doesn't care if she's fat as long as it doesn't get in the way of selling records. Most chubby/fat celebs eventually knuckle under and lose, but I've never heard this kind of defiance out of a celeb in being determined to remain fat.
