I was wondering what all the out-of-province driver's license holders have done with their licenses. Will companies expect you to have an Alberta license or is having an Ontario one ok? I'm asking because I'll be driving my ontario registered car over to Alberta (hope it makes it lol).

do you guys know if a reckless driving offense(dui dropped to reckless in court) from 2 1/2 yrs ago will hurt my chances of getting a job as a Mwd? I know that companies usually check 3 yrs back. What do u guys think?

Why don't you tell us a little bit more about yourself, first of all, are you legally allowed to work in Canada and do you have any MWD experience? If you answer no to either question, then you have a snow ball's chance in hell of getting work as an MWD in Canada.

Hard to say really because lots of guys don't post on here, some just message me for advice and then kind of disappear, it would be nice to have updates from the guys who are in Alberta to see how they're doing. Some guys are saying that it is way harder now to get a job so I guess that few hundred people (mostly lurkers) have moved to Alberta after reading your thread.

It may be crazy to say that your thread had an impact in Alberta's job market but I wouldn't be surprised if it did.

Out of curiosity were you doing anything to attract attention to yourself beyond a BC plate? I would think especially out here they're common.

I've had an NS plate for 6 months, haven't been pulled over. I was down in TX for 18 on AB plates, expired sticker for about 8 of those (though car was technically legal-long story) and never pulled over.

The reason for all these is because I keep on getting told I'm going places for 'short term loans of a few months' so it doesn't make sense to change the car over, but then they invariably extend and extend and both now, and in TX I find it's nearly impossible to properly register my car due to extenuating circumstances.

Not sure what my plan is. Might just chance it and say I'm only here for the winter if I get pulled over (despite my AB license - I guess cops aren't stupid) or park it at work and buy a beater, drive it back in spring.

I guess it's time I stop lurking and try to contribute. I discovered this thread about 3 months ago. I've been wanting to come out to Alberta from the wasteland that is Ontario for years. I guess I never had the balls to do it but this thread truly inspired me. This is nothing that hasn't been said a hundred times but Scotian: you're a fucking legend man. Atlantic: same to you. Seeing you move out here from across the pond is inspirational. Thanks to the many other contributors to this thread.

Now enough of that sappy shit. I packed up my stuff and drove across the country 3 weeks ago. As soon as I got here I scrambled to find a place to stay. The rental market is tough out here. Be prepared to pay a lot for a little. Managed to get a dingy basement just off Whyte ave. Location, location, location lol. I also worked on getting my safety tickets at Enform. Took about a week for the main ones. After that, I started applying everywhere. I didn't have a specific goal in mind, as I have no oilfield experience but I knew about Nisku so I went around and just talked to people. Personally I wanted to get into the service side of things but I'm not opposed to roughneck duty. I also worked a few temp jobs off Kijiji for subsistence like many others have suggested. There is work out here boys.

Anyways, this week I randomly sent out a bunch of resumes online and ended up getting a call back from a good service company. After a 5 minute interview, I was hired! Only starting field work next week so we'll see how it goes. I know I'll have no shortage of overtime which is awesome. Perhaps I got lucky but my point is, there are jobs out here if you're willing and able. Some people are going on about how the patch is dead right now but I think that's bullshit. It might not be like it was 10 years ago but just don't be picky and just put yourself out there.

I'm not sure I have any real practical advice for anyone as my journey is just beginning but I hope I can inspire some of the lurkers hesitating to make the leap!

I always wondered that too. Never understood why they always pulled me over when there were so many other cars with out of province plates. I never got a comment about anything else and as soon as we'd establish that I've been in AB for < 3 months they'd let me go. One guy at work had his Saskatchewan plates on his car for more than a year and I asked him if he's ever been stopped, he said no. Maybe I look suspicious I don't know. lol

Once for driving a girls car with outstanding parking tickets to my own driving test, another for racing an undercover mustang in Saskatchewan, and just last week off for having the wrong plates.
No tickets so far though.

Shit. I'm surprised they didn't do anything to you for racing the Mustang. And then poor Tresdus gets a 400 dollar plus fine.

I've got quite a few photo radar tickets though. I think I'm on my 7th one. Fucking radars in Edmonton don't fuck around. The last one I got was for driving 70 in a 60 zone. That one was specially painful. Fucking cunts give you a ticket for going 10 over!
