This is simply sickening. First of all, why was the guy arrested for? It's not illegal to film cops in a public place. These happy trigger cops need to be punished to the full extend of the law. What they did is simply unacceptable!

I doubt they can just fire shots in an urban area at will. But hell, I know nothing about police handgun policy except what common sense tells me.

Can't tell if the arrest itself was right or wrong (then again, I skipped through the video to near the end).

It's unfortunate a dog died being loyal to its owner. But if I'm a police officer arresting a guy, and his distressed dog starts running up to me like it might attack, I'm going to shoot first and ask questions later. I certainly wouldn't want to risk a bite to the face.

Dog attacks, and animal attacks in general, can really fuck you up.

Dogs are generally awesome so we sometimes forget how dangerous some of them can be when they want to be.

Even a 25 pound snake could kill you, apparently.

The fact is American cops can't even fight with criminals hand to hand.

'OMG, he is coming at me with a baseball bat, bang bang bang'
OMG, he is holding a knife 20 feet away, bang bang bang'

In countries that don't allow guns to average citizens, cops have to pretty much fight with bare hand or just baton.

I say gun is like a Gopher (that stupid stick that helps you pick up things without moving your ass) to them.

"Don't insult the police" is both practical advice and good citizenship. But police are granted power to enforce laws (using lethal force if necessary) in exchange for taking an oath to uphold the constitution, freely without reservation or evasion. They have a greater responsibility than a random person on the street.

The guy is responsible for being a dipshit but the police are responsible for failing to deal with him effectively. It is primarily police failure that resulted in the dead dog.

It's irrelevant because I'm not a police officer. This is not bleeding heart feminism, this is about whether you believe in civilization or not. Police are not given guns and the right to use them so they can play alpha on the taxpayer dime.

in this instance? the officer had the obvious option of the soft grass covered area right in front of him, between him and the dog. A low risk and non-reflective surface for the bullet to be absorbed into.

At least it wasn't a person hit I guess

RE: Man Films Police, Then Police Kill His Dog
We obviously don't know what was said. Cops are sensitive about being filmed since the whole Rodney King thing. There was some kind of police action, happening right there in public view. It isn't illegal for people to film that. If there was some kind of danger, they would have been telling people to move along, go inside your homes, etc. or taped off the area. I can't say that the guy was doing "dumb shit." Granted, you don't want to be up in their faces, filming them. Maybe they told him to move along, and he didn't comply. Maybe they threatened him if he didn't stop filming, which again, I think he has the right to do. The guy didn't resist - in fact, he looked like he knew the drill. It's unfortunate that the windows were rolled down and the dog got out to protect its owner - at that point, the police had little choice but to shoot. Especially if they're dealing with a Rot or a Pit Bull. In certain areas, people are used to, and tired of getting fucked with by police, so they are more apt to try to record what's going on. Pretty much EVERYONE is carrying a device that records. When police bust heads at peaceful protests, they tape over their badges so no one can identify them. I know highway police in some states have dash-mounted cameras, mostly for their own protection, but it also insures that they do their jobs by the book, so the footage can support their report.

Warning shots are largely tv and movie fantasy. If an officer discharges a weapon, it's at someone or something, and it's to kill. Period.

It looks like a rottweiler which is definitely a breed of dog that can fuck you up. But it's also true the dog had plenty of time to maul them when they weren't really paying attention to it, and it didn't. If it had attacked at least one of the cops would probably be in the hospital. But yes, I mostly blame the cops for instigating the situation, only partly for not being able to find a better way to thwart the dog than shooting it. (and yeah "warning shots" would be a bad idea. I'm not sure what canine counter-measures police have but I would think there are some that don't involve bullets)

I didn't watch the video. Don't like snuff films.

But - read the news article.

The guy was being a clown. He stopped at the scene only to screw with the police and defied their orders. It wasn't about the filming. Also, look at his prior arrest record.

The situation was caused by him and the results are on him only.

Awful. What a good boy.

We were meant for far more than to suffer in our self created prisons only to die alone. It doesn't have to be that way. It never did.

You know, looking at this, I don't see why people shouldn't be allowed to film the police. Keeps them in check no?

If we're going to take his arrest record into account we should do the same for the police officers of that department and their recent history of corruption/brutality. It doesn't look good for them and this just adds to their PR nightmare.

Yep the guy was an idiot but the cops were being heavy handed idiots. He clearly wasn't resisting and the dog thing well...

From what I saw, the cops walked up to the man, not the other way around. They initiated the conflict when the black guy was just filming and cuffed him for engaging in perfectly legal activity. He was being threatened and his dog reacted. That is at least how I saw it.

Honestly, the authorities ought to have a thicker skin. They are monitoring us 24/7, all our emails, phone calls, even through our cable boxes with cameras and microphones. God forbid we hold our public servants accountable and hold them to certain standards in their day to day work. Talk about a double standard

RE: Man Films Police, Then Police Kill His Dog
Just read this article:

http://www.dailybreeze.com/news/ci_23578...rest-owner

They all sound like pieces of shit. The cops, the dog owner. The owner tries to portray himself as this responsible citizen who's just making sure that cops aren't violating any civil rights, but based on his track record he's there to heckle and "get involved", meaning try to instigate some shit. He's a fucking mosquito that doesn't know when to stop. As shitty as those cops are, I'm sure they have to deal with scum like this on a daily basis, and much worse. An extreme example that comes to mind is killing civilians during wartime. You can get on your soapbox and preach about the responsibility of soldiers all you want, but until you get on the front line and have to deal with that insanity then noone's in a position to preach. I can imagine cops in Hawthorne having to deal with plenty of bullshit that chips away at their mental sanity.

That said, they're fucking pussies. I've been attacked by a rottweiler and I handled it fine. I had to get stitches in my hip and a few shots but I fought it off without 3 people helping me out with handguns.

Beautiful animal, what a shame the people are scum.

It never cease to amaze me how Americans are trigger happy. Using guns where not needed its not only weak but stupid as well.
I thought that police were trained to read animals and human behaviour/intentions so they can prevent situation like this. Police panicked like a little girl and shot the dog.

Sad story where two parties are in fault both sides over reacted and tragedy happened.

Quote:Hawthorne police Lt. Scott Swain said. "And I know it's the dog's master, and more than likely not going to attack him, (but) we've got a guy handcuffed that's kind of defenseless. We have a duty to defend him, too."

From the news article...Jackasses.

Ignoring the absolute retardity (yeah we needed a new word for this) of the above statement:

1) They shouldn't have arrested this guy in the first place. By the way, they claimed he resisted arrest? Huh

2) I'm pretty sure they could have held the dog off long enough to uncuff the owner, who was not a threat of getting violent or running away, and let him put the dog back in the car and tighten the windows.

This shit doesn't really surprise me though. Where I'm from there are a lot of stories of cops busting pot growers and shooting dogs that are CHAINED UP for acting aggressive. Usually with a smirk to the owner.

They love destroying what's most important to you (another unrelated example, they sat my buddy down once and opened all the kids Christmas presents in front of them, claiming they were checking them for drugs. This after giving him a good slapping in front of them).

Wake up, America - we've given our police far too much power. To those saying he brought the attention to himself and should do everything in his power to avoid the police - like a bully on a playground, one guy said - I tend to agree from an INDIVIDUAL standpoint that it's best to protect yourself with common sense, in all situations. But when did we decide to allow our police and government to be the bully on the playground in the first place? It's unacceptable that it's come to this.

They rob our privacy around the clock yet can't handle us filming them back? They don't like it because they can no longer hide their bullshit. There was another guy in cali recently who was murdered by the cops after passing out on his way home from the bar and the police actually went to witnesses' homes afterwards and took their phones away from them. One lawyer managed to get the phone back and it was broken.

This shit needs to stop. We need to stop being okay with it.

Beyond All Seas

"The individual has always had to struggle to keep from being overwhelmed by the tribe.
To be your own man is a hard business. If you try it, you'll be lonely often, and sometimes
frightened. But no price is too high to pay for the privilege of owning yourself." - Kipling

A lot of insecure losers become cops, hence events like this

OR
