My grandfather was a heavy smoker too. Died from lung cancer when I was still a little kid. My mom said in his last years he was wheezing heavily and couldn't even walk up stairs. I know there's always that guy that says he smoked 2 packs a day for 40 years and is healthier than Jack LaLane in his prime, but some people are just genetic outliers. Like that dude I read about from the mid-west who eats nothing but Big Macs, fries and cokes every single day and still has low cholesterol. Some people can handle it, many can't. Our lungs didn't evolve to inhale burning particulate matter so I don't fuck with it. Or at least very sparingly.

I only started smoking last year and used to only smoke when I could bum cigarettes off friends. Then I came to Europe and its slightly less acceptable to bum cigs here, so I bought a pack of Marlboros. Then I went through a duty-free area in an airport so I picked up a carton of Marlboros for €2 a pack so I wouldn't have to pay so much for each pack. These are also cool since they don't have one of those ugly warnings on the pack and you get people asking where they're from.

They're very handy for socializing, but I limit myself to only smoking when others are, or if there's a girl in the smoking area that I want to talk to. I still get a bit high when I smoke, so I want to keep that going. About 2 cigarettes each time I smoke is enough for me. Any more don't affect me aside from making my throat feel like shit the next morning.

Call it absurd all you want. What I'm noticing is that there are a lot more folks out there who claim to be atheists. I can speculate all day about the reasons, but I think it has to do with it being low investment and the majority of these 15 minute philosophs think it makes them real smart to question the existence of a god.

Smoking has a slightly higher investment; I've also noticed a much higher uptick of casual smokers and all kinds of queerness (like not-so-casual young pipe and cigar smokers). Smoking requires a lighter and a pack of cigarettes, or if you're a scumbag, knowing people who always carry a lighter and smokes.

Smoking's a "proven dangerous behavior" like drinking soda or sitting on your ass all day.

Smoke because you like it, smoke because you love tobacco. Smoke because it relaxes you. Smoke because you appreciate a good cigar. Smoke because cigarretes just go with coffee.

But dont smoke because "its cool". Thats lame, doing things to be cool. You are cool or you are not, smoking is not going to give you style or make you cool.

This. I'm not a smoker but anyone who claims smoking openers don't have value haven't had enough experience with it. At this point i'd say it's a invaluable move in a player's repertoire.

^This. I'm not saying you have to be a pack a day smoker like myself, but a player should at least smoke when he's out on the town. I get opened almost nightly because of this.

alot of extreme negativity on the cigarettes. reminds me of the 'reefer madness'.

smoking works....but if you can't control it and if you imagine yourself becoming a fiend then obviously don't start. on the other hand, if you can control it i've found take-it-or-leave-it social smoking to be worth it since you can appeal to a wider range of girls. personally, i enjoy the change of tempo for a cigarette break and the small buzz. it gives you a good excuse to take a girl away from the noise of the scene and talk one-on-one. last but not least, it's a shared activity and i'd argue that its useful for building additional rapport.

within the last 2 years, i can say without hesitation that picking up social smoking when I go out (1-3 cigs max/night) has been a net benefit for me and has helped me to get a handful of lays. also girls that smoke are usually DTF faster.

I don't smoke much when I'm not drinking, and when I'm smoking weed I mix it with tobacco, and so don't bother with many cigs at all. 'Tis a pleasurable high, though, I wouldn't mind getting a nicotine vape. That would probably make for a good prop for girls to open you with, as well. Don't even need to worry about going outside to use it, either.

One of these would be truly boss though..

History is not linear, so hypothetically one could argue that smoking will come back in fashion as it was in the Mad Men era. Still, I don't see that happening. There's been a determined and generation-long propaganda war against smoking that is not going in reverse. For a detailed look I recommend a book "Velvet Glove, Iron Fist", a fascinating treatise on the war on tobacco that had been waged ever since smoking was invented.

Smoking can be "cool" in your particular context but society-wise? I think not.
