How long do you plan to stay? You can get a tourist visa, or double entry tourist visa, assuming you are American. Not sure for other countries. A tourist visa will allow you to stay up to 90 days without leaving the country. With a double entry, you can stay for 6 months, but have to leave the country after 3 months.

To the OP:
I found that the ones who work a job will often offer to pay depending on how frequently you see them. From my experience the ones who have jobs and are looking for more than one or two nights of fun above their pay grade work hard to distinguish themselves from greedy Thai women and one way they do this is by paying especially when you invite them out.

If you ask a Thai girl out, especially if you have not know or long or she gets the impression that you will not be around for long, expect to pick up the check. If she invites you out with her friends then you should pretty much demand to split the check (obviously covering her share and yours). If she plays stupid then excuse yourself and leave because when Thais go out as group from what I have seen 9/10 the check is split between everyone.

If you don't want to pay for sex then stay away from venues that are filled with prostitutes and freelancers. You will be expected to cover the bill for everyone. If a group of Thai girls go out, they may split the check. However, if a mixed group of Thais go out, the oldest Thai is expected to pay. If he doesn't/can't it is a loss of face. Like he isn't successful because he's the oldest, and couldn't afford to pay for everyone.

I met a girl for a date from TF and she brought along 3 friends without telling me. I didn't pay for all of them because that is something I would never do in the US. After they left, my bartender friend who is Thai told me I was expected to pay for them, and that it was a loss of face for the girl. The rule is actually that if someone is your guest then you should pay for them. So if you invite someone out then you pay the bill (though not all Thais adhere to this and will spilt 50/50 on dates) so if she invites you out with her friends you should not really have to pay, as you are their guest. I've often went out with a group of Thais and had them insist they would pay for my drinks because I'm the guest or we've just split the bill evenly. I've never been invited out by a group or gone to meet a girl who's been with friends and been expected to pick up the tab for all of them. It's not all black and white but generally if someone is your guest then you pay for them. Most of the younger Thais are a bit more modern and progressive than this and wouldn't assume that just because you are a foreigner that you will pay, any that do are chancing their luck and probably looking for a free night out. Who brings friends on dates anyway?

Exactly. This is not Thai culture, women don't tend to have ONS with strangers met in clubs, their friends would exile them for going off and fucking foreigners. That's what whores do. The ones on the dating sites tend to have had foreign boyfriends before and have probably been pumped and dumped by a few farang since. You're best to target the newer girls to the site who are more naive.

The girls hooking up with foreigners are often the ones that no local guys want (which in Thailand isn't always bad, I like dark skinned girls the Thai guys don't) or they've lived abroad, had a taste of foreigners (who on the whole are much more forward and aggressive - in a good way) than the local guys. That's one of the main things that freaks me out about my upcoming trip to SE Asia, if I ever accidentally hooked up with one, I don't know what would happen but I imagine it would be something like what Begby did in Trainspotting when it happened to him.

I was reading another blog about thailand and the guy said a good rule of thumb is the drunker you are the shorter the girl should be just to be safe.

It's mostly a non issue. After a week or two they are easy to spot. You are very unlikely to get tricked, unless you secretly want to.

Sounds good thanks for the reassurance, I'm just paranoid because I know that after a few drinks my level of judgement in pretty much all matters goes out the window. This is one of the reasons I don't plan on partying too much over there, probably a week or so in Bangkok then going directly to a Muay Thai camp and locking myself down with that for the majority of my trip.

As rionomad said outside of the clubs in Sukhumvit etc you will never run across one, and even if you are pretty hammered you will definetly know something is not quite right way before you have a mistake you will regret. Despite being here a while I've been tricked couple of times and not realised until I was about to pull them home, and even one I only realised when we were in bed (before doing anything thankfully). 99% of them are obvious but... some are very subtle. So you need some defenses -

Ultimate ladyboy test:

Extend their arm out at the elbow as far as it will go. Guys arms look straight or very nearly straight when you do this. Girls arms nearly always hyperextend noticably - i.e, they dont looke straight - the lower arm angles away from the upper arm, pointing away from the body. It's down to joint formation when you're young, ladyboys cant change this... yet.

Another good test is make her show you her hand. If she "hides" her thumb e.g. tries to keep it towards the palm or slightly below her index finger, or wont let you look at her hand for a minute, that's a big red flag (she's self-conscious about man-hands and trying to make them look feminine)

Of course you can always just ask to see her ID card too. But, they can get fake ones easily enough.

Yeah the ID card is a good way to tell, even if they are a ladyboy the ID has to show the sex they were born as. Their ID cards have English on them too so you can read it, if it says 'Mr' then fucking run. My photo on my ID is funny so I say "look at my funny photo" and let them see it then ask if I can see theres. It's Thai law that you always have to carry ID (for foreigners too but it's often overlooked) so if they say they don't have it they are probably not telling the truth.

Hey man join thaifriendly.com as they have intense monitoring on ladyboys and pros on this site unlike dateinasia.com. I say 75%+ on thaifriendly.com are normal university girls. A few I met had multiple houses in Bkk and other cities. Some even traveled/studied abroad.

ThaiFriendly definitely seems to be the best best. I've met and had sex with girls from Thai Friendly, Thai Love Links, Tagged, Couchsurf and POF but TF has been the most consistent for decent girls and bangs. Most of the girls I met from there were relatively normal girls, worked or studied, had OK jobs, spoke good English and didn't seem to be just after a free night out.
