To answer your question, yes I pulled a stunner without hassle and paid absolutely nothing. I never p4p in my life. You are right in that the poverty rate is substantial, but there is a thriving middle class. Also, if there is a load of white guys around, I didn't see any of them. There was FUCK ALL backpackers around. I take it from your research you haven't been yourself. Would I be correct? No disrespect, I only make this presumption because my experience differs vastly from the Addis you describe.

No -- I haven't been to Addis yet, but I have known Ethiopians since I was young. I met a lot in the US, as well as Europe (particularly, Scandinavia). One of my best friends is Ethiopian. I have friends -- Black American -- who are married to Ethiopian women. I know a lot about their sensibilities...as well as their culture. I don't need to physically be in Ethiopia to feel them. They tell me things that they would never tell a white person. We Afr-Ams call it "Black talk".

Another thing, I didn't state that there were lots of white dudes in Ethiopia. However, they are not so rare because Europeans backpack thru E Africa (Kenya, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Tanzania, ect.) extensively. There's also a number of NGOs in ADDIS with white aid workers.

One thing that I know about most Ethiopians, is that they are proud people. They kicked the Italians out during the war. Ethiopian women/men are not fascinated by white people in general. But, they are poor, and white people represent wealth to them. Most of the white dudes that I know who go to Ethiopia pay the girls in some form or another. Perhaps, you lucked out there...but, I don't think that's very common for white dudes.

I know Ethiopian women like to put up this fake attitude in public some times when they are in a large Ethiopian populated community because they don’t want people spreading rumors about them. But if you find them a lone they are cool with it and could get lucky really fast. They mostly come from a very poor home since Ethiopia is a really poor country so they look for guys who look like they got some money and a nice car, some can be some real gold diggers though.
