RE: The Ethereum Thread (the alt coin to Bitcoin)
Holy cow Dogecoin is going crazy. I had a few left and sold them a few months ago, x15 in price, FML. Their subreddit activity has increased literally 100x. I hate not being part of it Sad I have a feeling it's going to at least 1 cent but that's only a ~3x return and I am not buying after it's gone up by 15 times, no way.

Looked at Ethereum Classic as an alternative, nope, now it's at freaking 8 bucks.

When will this insanity stop?

It seems that it always goes down around 11pm-6am eastern time. Any reason as to why? I was actually going to bed around the time and decided not to check the exchange if I would've i'd be sitting on more ETH right now

Have set up an account on Coinbase, waiting for that bank confirm.

I may do a $7500 ETH and $2500 BTH split for now.

Do you guys see the ETH rally continuing through the week?

Since it broke out in March ETH has consistently exhibited the classic "high tight flag" chart pattern: a steep breakout followed by a moderate correction and then several days or weeks of consolidation.

While there's a chance of additional big news dropping this week, I'd be willing to bet ETH continues with that pattern of dropping slightly over the next day or two and then consolidating, likely around $170 or so.

I'd give it a few days to cool off and then buy in once the price volatility subsides.

Repped for the timely advice. The timing that you're describing works well with my coinbase account being active by that point.

I see some excellent upside with ETH but still want to keep 1 BTC, just in case.

I'd also suggest creating another account at a different exchange (I use Kraken) in order to secure an additional fiat onramp.

It may take some time to raise your buy/sell limits at each exchange; having two accounts verified and connected to your bank helps ensure you'll be able to invest the full $10k ASAP.

Appreciate the continuing advice. Makes sense. I have also opened up an account at Kraken. Learning about Cryptos while waiting for the bank verification.

What exchange are people using for the non-big 3 (BTC, ETH, LTC) currencies?

What is liquidity like for all these new cryptos?

They may be rising in value like crazy - but is it possible to sell them efficiently so you can lock in profits?

Which exchanges and brokers are the best to use?

Broker Adds Cryptocurrencies to Exchange: One of the world’s largest foreign exchange (forex) brokers is adding several cryptocurrencies. The forex market is the largest and most liquid financial market in the world. And AvaTrade is one of the biggest players in this space. AvaTrade recently announced that it’s adding several cryptocurrencies. So along with dollars, yen, and euros, you can now exchange bitcoin and Dash. You can learn more about the new cryptocurrency options on AvaTrade

Poloniex and Bittrex are the two crypto-only (no fiat onramp) exchanges I use that cover most of the alts.

I mostly use Kraken as a way to wire USD into an exchange, then I buy Ethereum and send it to Polo and Bittrex where I cash it in for Bitcoin in order to buy other alts.

These days I have to use Ethereum to transfer value via crypto between exchanges, as the fees and confirmation times on Bitcoin are both becoming prohibitively high.

That's a great question.

Coinmarketcap.com keeps a daily updated list of volume rankings by exchange. That's a great place to do some due diligence to ensure liquidity both for the asset you're trading as well as the exchange pairing with which you're working.

Makes sense. I'll need to get a Polo/Bittrex accounts set up as well.

Hopefully, I'll have the dollars into ETH soon so that I can start pushing the funds through to the other Alts. I have some birthday money that I'd like to speculate with Smile

For the Alts, my strategy is to put equal amounts in the top 10 (minus BTC, ETH, LTC) and then verify the returns.

We are never really going to know for sure why prices move in one direction or another, even though we may have some decent theories regarding such movements whether they correlate or inversely correlate as you say with LTC.

If you look at LTC, it had been pretty stagnant, and kind of considered a dead or dying coin, until it became a stong contender to test seg wit and the lightning network for BTC.. so in that sense, the more that seg wit seems it is not going to be implemented any time soon in BTC, the more useful and valueable LTC became.

Regarding your suggestion that BTC and ETH are correlated, that could be a temporary phenomenon, too in which each of them are likely prospering from the pump of the other. So, sure, sometimes you see ETH and BTC moving together - but that correlation is not always true and is not likely to be true in the future - some of the extent to which there is correlation is going to depend upon future developments as well as at some point there will be a crash of the crypto bubble, and that could cause one or the other to crash harder or to inversely correlate at the time of the crash or soon after the crash.

Various correlation or inverse correlation factors can change quickly in the crypto space - however, they can also take months and months to evolve - such as considering projects on the horizon, hacking attacks, politics, public spin and momentum (otherwise known as speculation)

I'd recommend using Gemini for initial ETH purchase. There are no wire transfer fees and the maker/taker fees are 0.25%. GDAX is zero if you do a maker order.

I personally don't like Kraken and their layout, even with cryptowat.ch. But I think Kraken and Poloniex are the best places for the alt coins.

Hopefully you are taking some profits along the way too?

I understand that HODL can be a decent strategy, too, but I personally think that taking some profits is a bit better and guys are going to come to different judgements regarding how much profits to take along the way upwards...

Personally, I feel that I have a pretty strong plan regarding my degree of HODL, SODL or BUYDL; however, when the price of any asset (including cryptos) goes up 5% or 10% in a few days (or more), and then it keeps doing that for several days and even weeks - it can become a bit paralyzing, even to consider if you should tweak your plan a bit.. invest more or to take some profits.

Your assertion seems really strange. Can you provide a link to the information that shows that?

Usually if you can link a bank account, then you can do both buying and selling... but maybe with a credit card, you may only be able to buy? But most guys here do not recommend using a credit card for getting into crypto, unless you have some kind of urgent reason and you don't mind paying more (in most cases).

The FOMO is real, but at least guys here are actively doing something about it. I've had two friends (both relatively attractive Asian girls) talk to me about how they were "totally gonna put money in BTC last year" but never got around to it. Now they're asking if they can just give me money and for me to sell out their positions after a 100% gain(!). Too lazy to even want to set up the basics, they just want someone to give them money.

Sorry about that. These crypto currencies must be causing me to go blind and delusional, if I was not already in that inclination...

I see what you are saying, and it appears that they are not yet authorized to provide the linking of bank accounts - likely some kind of regulatory approval thing.

If you don't really know other ways to get bitcoin, and you want to use Coinbase to get in through a credit card, then you can still protect your coins from volatility by establishing other accounts on other exchanges - because once you have the coins, you can send some of them to an exchange and then just hold them in dollars whenever you are concerned about bitcoin being in a bubble, and then convert back to bitcoin when you find a way to cash out, if you want to cash out.

Probably within a year or so, coinbase will have bank transfer options in australia, and I am sure that there are other australian options.

Maybe someone more familiar with possible australian options can chime in here?

Gives you some options. It looks like BTCC and GDAX maybe. Although it seems GDAX is owned by Coinbase - is that right?

I'm also trying to use an Australian bank account, so need an alternative to Coinbase to sell.

This past Monday a buddy and I live-streamed the EEA portion of the Consensus 2017 conference, with CNBC on an additional monitor above. I snapped this photo during JP Morgan's presentation on Quorum, the bank's private Ethereum network.

I feel like it beautifully captures so much of the current moment. The Fake News Media is distracting the public with click-bait nonsense, while the framework for the Web 3.0 is being created, in real time, for anyone who cares enough to pay attention to it.

Old systems are dying. New systems are being born.

What a time to be alive.
