On Tuesday morning, Hall was informed by the school system that she was under investigation by the police department, Currie said. She was subsequently interviewed by investigators, who had also interviewed the victim.
Jenny Faulkner, public information officer for the Alamance-Burlington School System, reported earlier in the afternoon that Hall had been suspended with pay, pending an investigation. Faulkner confirmed Tuesday evening that Hall had resigned.
Hall had been employed with ABSS since September 1994, when she began working as a teacher assistant. She became a teacher in 1996, and began working at Turrentine Middle School in 2007, Faulkner said.

She was a varsity softball coach at Western Alamance High School from 2001 to 2002 and a volleyball coach at Turrentine from 2005 to 2006.
On Turrentine's website, Hall was listed Tuesday afternoon as a sixth-grade EC teacher.

Considering that school district demographics are majority black (although declining in ratio and overall numbers), the jury was probably similarly comprised and perhaps a bit sympathetic.

"When I was first advised on this matter, I placed Ms. Torbick on administrative leave as of Thursday, Jan. 26," Morgan said. "This is a personnel matter and I am not going to comment on the particulars of this case or the allegations and charges. As always, the safety and well-being of all of our students remains the highest priority."

Morgan said Torbick's arrest is "in no way" connected with the resignation earlier in the week of Jim Tremblay as the school's principal.

Exeter Region Cooperative School Board Chairwoman Helen Joyce said, "Because this a personnel issue and an ongoing police investigation, we really cannot comment at this time."

Torbick worked for the Bedford School District for five years and departed on friendly terms at the end of the 2016 school year, according to Superintendent Chip McGee.

"We're stunned here," McGee said. "We had no experience other than wonderful work as a school counselor. Not to challenge the truth of what's happening in the news, but we're just so surprised."

Torbick was listed as an Exeter High School student services counselor on the SAU 16 website and has since been removed. SAU 16 serves the towns of Brentwood, East Kingston, Exeter, Kensington, Newfields and Stratham.

Torbick is scheduled to appear in Brentwood District Court March 30.
