There's a very good possibility that that was the first time Richard Spencer has ever been punched in the face, or experienced any sort of violence directed at his person. The very fact that he was so glibly standing around in the street amidst a hostile crowd giving an interview supports that view. People who have never personally experienced violence tend to view it abstractly. It's something that happens in movies, or on the news. The idea that some random person might punch YOU in the face (or worse) doesn't seem possible. That's what it looked like - he didn't even seem aware of the possibility that someone might physically attack him. I'm sure now he knows better and will be more cautious in the future.

Also, if you've never been sucker punched like that you shouldn't be so quick to label him a pussy based on his reaction. It's very disconcerting and disorienting to take a punch out of nowhere when you aren't even thinking about being in a fight. Your first reaction isn't anger or retaliation, it's total confusion, especially if the punch connected well. What just happened? Did I get punched? Who punched me? Where is he? It's a lot to process in a matter of seconds when you just got your bell rung by a guy you didn't even see coming. I got sucker punched like that in a bar many years ago. Caught me square in the jaw while I was in the middle of a conversation. By some miracle I didn't go down (in hindsight the fact that I was quite drunk at the time might have actually helped), but I was basically out on my feet and didn't know what happened. I just turned and stared at the guy, who was apparently so unnerved by the fact that I took his best haymaker straight to the jaw and simply turned and looked at him that he immediately ran out of the bar. And that was definitely not me being a badass and intentionally trying to intimidate him. It was just my genuine response of confusion trying to figure out what the hell just happened. This all took place in a matter of seconds. Real life happens fast like that. Getting sucker punched is no joke. Doesn't matter if you're the biggest, baddest dude in the world. If you take a nasty punch you don't see coming, it's going to fuck you up, and you're probably not going to be able to retaliate very well if at all. As far as I'm concerned, if you get sucker punched and are able to walk away without serious injury, you won the encounter. Expecting more than that in the vast majority of cases is the realm of fantasy.

I know we're all internet tough guys here, but we must make allowances for the mere mortals out there like Richard Spencer who don't immediately start cracking skulls after being sucker punched during an interview.

^^^I agree with everything you wrote. However, Richard Spencer bragged about bullying Bill Mitchell less than 24 hours before this sucker punch . He was playing tough guy games, and when push came to shove he was proven not to be so tough. His position is the "intellectual" of the Alt Right, but increasingly he has taken a belligerent aggressive stance. He should can the tough talk and stay in his lane. Sucker Punching is wrong and fucked up, so is bullying the elderly.

The only way you can defend yourself from a surprise attack is with serious training. Martial artists have known for centuries, that your real ability to fight is determined by repetition, training and practice. If you don't practice a move repetitively for several hours a week over a period of years, it is unlikely to work in a real fight. I have a certain set of moves that I train with for several hours every week. If I am sucker punched, my mind will be confused. But it doesn't matter. Because I have muscle memory and my body will be blocking, punching, kicking, and snapping or gouging any vulnerable body part in sight. My mind doesn't need to be there. The body has been conditioned to have muscle memory and can act more quickly on its own. Another point: if you practice martial arts, your body is always balanced with the center of gravity low to the ground, whether you are walking or standing. If someone comes behind me while I am waiting at a curb and tries to push me into the oncoming traffic, I am not going anywhere.

No, Spencer is an asshole for bulling the elderly and bragging about it but a whiner when someone comes after him. If Spencer had not been so proud about physically intimidating Bill Mitchell, then posting about it on Twitter- then I would have a lot more sympathy for him when he got sucker punched. Bullies get what they get, and when they get it they get no sympathy from me. I still think sucker punching is wrong, so is bullying the elderly.

Bill Mitchell isn't exactly a doddering octogenarian, and he's constantly stirring shit. Notoriety comes with consequences and obviously, there's a huge difference between talking to or yelling at someone face to face and sucker punching them.

As to Spencer "whining", did you actually watch his post-punch periscope? He basically said "I'm fine, whatever, here's what happened." Otherwise, is he supposed to just act like someone didn't attack him for no reason, especially when it happened on camera? I have a friend who's blind in one eye from being sucker punched in a club. People die from sucker punches. It's not like it's no big deal.

I don't agree completely with that. I think he's been privileged and coddled, yes, and perhaps he doesn't understand violence very well, but I find it hard to reconcile being a hated public figure who deliberately goes out into a personally very dangerous environment, apparently trolling for reactions, with being a pussy.

If he keeps it up, I think we can conclusively say Spencer isn't a pussy, no matter what else he is. If he quits, then perhaps the answer is he didn't realize what he was doing and has no stomach for it now that he realizes it's dangerous, which would make him a pussy.

Time will tell.

^ You're not going to have White Nationalism if you don't get the Working Class on board. Being Working Class, I can tell you that no-one I know would ever respect Spencer as any kind of Leader.

I don't think the Alt-Right realises how weird and fundamentally-off their Thought Leaders read to the average person. Class resentments still exist. Trump seems to know how to bridge that gap. Spencer simply does not have that ability. Hell, Jack Donovan is far better at it than Spencer.

I'm a very blunt and declarative guy in person, with a much simpler vocabulary. I keep my intelligence well-hidden and the many English Affectations I picked up during my childhood from my grandmother and English Children's books out of my speech. Resentment and suspicion can be generated from something as simple as using 'dear' instead of 'pricey' or 'exxy' (expensive). I'm always fighting the urge to call someone a 'rotter' rather than a 'cunt'. I wish I lived in a world where I could, but I'm intelligent enough to understand that it's ineffective rhetoric that divides you from others.

Personally, I think White Nationalism is a waste of time. The genie isn't going back in the bottle, and most people would rather live under the known threat of terrorism, which can be dismissed as a unlikely-risk, than the social consequences of being labelled Racist. Physical removal of all non-whites from a society would require such a large upheaval in people's comfort - and there's enough psychological evidence that shows that people choose the safe and familiar patterns of their life over the frightening unfamiliar even at threat to their own health and safety - that it would have to be a decision for which the majority has no say in, which means the cops and the army would have to be controlled by the White Nationalists, and that's not happening any time soon, at least in heavily-socialist countries like Oz.

People have an amazing ability to ignore their best self-interests and embrace self-destruction, even in such narcissistic times as these.

Whether I like someone or not, whether I think he's effective or not, I prefer to assess him accurately, not pile on negatives that might not be true out of dislike. That sort of thing leads to underestimating people.

Your expectations of what he should have done are way too high. I agree he could have and should have done more, but he was giving a media interview.

I have spoken to a range of current and former cops and soldiers over the last few years. All in all, the number one fear they consistently relay to me, aside from the impact of their potential death on their families and letting their comrades down, is that of being blindsided by someone whilst on duty or during an operation. One frail but strangely youthful Vietnam War vet was especially frank: "There was always the possible shame of being killed from behind, the side, or below, not face-to-face." This is not to speak for all cops and soldiers from the beginning of time, but it has always struck me how mortal emotionally many of these heroes are. It makes me respect their service even more.

If these guys are trained professionals and have this fear, and men from their ranks also sometimes/often get killed by surprise, I don't feel like judging Spencer too harshly.

Spencer has never claimed to be a Tommy Robinson type, quite happy to have a scrap or even major punch-up. He is more like a Geert Wilders, clearly not a fighter in a physical sense, but nonetheless highly intelligent and a serious asset against political correctness.

Let's not forget that Roosh was nearly seriously injured in mid-2015. He talked about feeling a little sheepish about "Jennifer"/Katie B. Nelson tricking him in Montreal, but it would be too much to expect him to have anticipated the quick formation of that mob any more than he did.

Hobbes' Leviathan is still amazingly prescient - we are vulnerable sacks of meat and being large or physically very capable is at best an insurance policy.

That said, Spencer needs fucking security now. People are focusing too much on his family privilege, but he could at least use it to bolster his safety.
