I have been a professional poker player and it has been a critical source of income for me for the better part of a decade. However, it is extremely complicated as a job and extremely technical at higher levels.

Sounds like you turned pro at the right time. I'm not sure how enjoyable it would be to make your living from the game these days though, what keeps you in it?

Feel free to enlighten us. I get where you're coming from but it's all relative, we're not pro players playing for a living, we're regular guys who enjoy playing at lower levels. Bear in mind the discussion is relative to that. Dissecting the hand, talking position, pot odds, table dynamics etc would be overkill.

Whether this is the place or not to talk poker that's what we're doing, it's a poker thread. Nobody asked for help as far as I can remember without re-reading the thread but opinions will be offered as is the nature of forums. Feel free to contribute, I for one would be interested in hearing what you have to say.

I noticed real quick. I am a live pro. There's not a lot of money online, at least in comparison to the stakes and skill levels you can play inside a casino.

Are there games in Asia? I want to become location independent eventually, without hustling poker.

I'm from a similar background as yourself and 2+2 is the way to go.Online poker has been destroyed and is zero fun now. Going back 10 years ago i thought I would be playing for life. Ive played about once in 2 years. Still some of the best years of my life I can still grind out an income but really started to just feel like a regular job with loads of math and stress

yeah. 2 + 2 was the very first online forum that I joined back in 2006. Besides pocket 5's, it is the 800 pound gorilla of online poker information.

of course, all of the really good info has dissapeared since black Friday

Those still in the game supplement w/other hustles.

Big one is sports-betting like fantasy (DFS) or betting sports exchanges, working as a runner for big groups, selling action on their local book accounts. Stuff like that....

I know what you're saying and I prefer live play, but you can learn much quicker by playing online since you see so many more hands per hour and you get much faster at calculating odds, ect.

As for the other replies, Bluff Ave is for play money only, as far as real money online I use BetOnline. However I was unable to set up a private game (or even add friends) when I tried the other day. Anyone have any ideas how we can set up a game?

The same principles apply online, it's just different. I prefer playing live but online was great before everybody got clued up on how to play.

The US government killed online poker as we remember it when they made it illegal to play online. In one fell swoop they removed the big money and the easy money from the game, that's why most people have moved on.

There is still a poker scene but it's not what it was, the foundation is no longer there. Should the US government ever rescind that retarded decision it would breathe new life into the scene.

It's crazy how it can be legal to purchase firearms in a country but illegal to play poker online there. For the guys that live in the US what's your thoughts on this?

^ I remember when that happened in 2011 I had just started learning how to play so I was pissed. The other sites that are out there typically fold up within a year or two, and the players are MUCH tighter than they were back in the Pokerstars days. I can only imagine what it must have been like for good online players back in the 90s...must have been like shooting fish in a barrel.

Dude, it is NOT illegal to play poker online for money. It IS illegal to move money from your bank account to a gambling site. or from the site to your bank account.

For the poker sites, it is illegal to take a rake in a poker game, but it is not illegal to provide poker to public players.

And I agree that online gambling should be banned. I have seen dozens of people's lives ruined by gambling. Being able to do it online just makes it that much easier.

Once you have seen a wife beg and cry for her husband to leave the poker room and come home and feed the children, and the husband tells security to throw her out of the casino because he does not know her, you understand how much more destructive gambling is than any gun. Repeat that scene 5 or 6 times and you realize that gambling needs to be made less legal.

Yeah, because making drugs illegal totally stops people from using them. It doesn't work any better for gambling. It just makes people who are addicted risk more dangerous situations to feed their demons.

Just because some people can't manage addictions doesn't mean the rest of use should suffer. You cannot legislate morality; our society would be much better off if the government stopped trying to.

@Red_Pillage - when the poker boom started even amateur players could clean up just by being disciplined and by playing ABC poker. Hats off to those who made the most of it, I look back at an opportunity missed.

With regards to the US governments stance on online poker I just don't think it makes any sense. They have basically outlawed a multi million dollar industry that could have been taxed. Degenerate gamblers will just move on to the next thing.

Gotta protect those casinos! Not going to get any kickbacks if they don't.

I used to play online several nights a week. Never made much money at it but I enjoyed it. But I'm not spending my time dicking around in casinos, it's a major inconvenience for me to even get to the nearest one, and it's not like I can sign up for a tournament any time I want at a casino either. Having to go to a casino in person essentially raises the barrier to me playing poker by about ten times, so I simply do other stuff now.
