RE: Weightlifting is not a panacea for attraction problems
A quick aside here: I bring notes from work or something quick to review in between sets at the gym. My gym time then benefits me physically, emotionally (chicks squatting in yoga pants), mentally (I get to review stuff or slowly learn new stuff), and professionally (I have more concrete job knowledge than the other guys of my similar experience).

In game terms, I am bigger, healthier, smarter, have more dispensable income (due to prepping my own food and sticking to a diet), confident, and more well-rounded. All that increases attraction.

Plus once in a while a chick sees what I'm studying and uses it as an opener.

Accept it, deny it, whatever makes you sleep better at night

OGNorCal - your workout level is good as long as you keep at it, which most guys don't. Most guys are not in shape, so even if you have a flat stomach and a little definition then you are good.

Bosch and Linux are extreme examples, but you can see the results they get.

The game is so much easier when you have a decent build, women approach, then they touch and the rest is up to you.

What really helped me was having a committed work out partner, we helped each other break through certain plateaus.

RE: Weightlifting is not a panacea for attraction problems
I agree with OGNorCal 100% regarding the genetics argument.

It's always amazes me how otherwise brilliant guys underestimate the role genetics plays in bodybuilding or any sport for that matter.

I know 2 Nigerian brothers I went to school with who were skinny but very lean. When I first met them, i was already lifting for a year. They started working out with me and within 6 months both looked like they could be Men's Physique models. 5'10, 185 pounds and sub 10% bf! They never went as hard as i did. Always were into low weight/high rep schemes. They start attention whoring on Instagram and currently have over 15,000 followers posting motivational quotes like
"If you really want it ..." or " It's all about calluses, sweat & tears! ". One of the brothers was my floor mate and I have seen their diets. They ate twice a day ... Pizza, burgers, Top Ramen ... I doubt they even pulled 3000 calories.

Another example ....

Sophomore year of college my school hosts a 10k run. I'm Ethiopian. Never ran in my life and used to smoke half a pack of Camel Menthols a day at that point. I decide to participate out of boredom. Many of the contestants were cross country athletes who run daily. Some were long distance enthusiasts along with several soccer players, football players and regular healthy folk. About 200 contestants all in all.

Guess who won first place with no training? Moi ! My school even offered me a scholarship right after which i lost due to not showing up for training.

Powerlifting/Strength Training wise ... people of Scandinavian & Germanic descent will always have an advantage. Just look at all the strongmen worldwide. Some jolly redneck from Minnesota i know with a very Scandinavian last name (Olmansson or something) and hair so blonde it was almost white was benching 225 pounds for 3 reps FIRST time he ever lifted. He weighed like 200 lbs.

I didn't believe him at first. Within 3 months he was benching 315 for God knows how many times. He had a heavy frame, huge bones and a tendency to store a lot of fat.

It's easy to fall into the "You just have to WANT it bad enough" or " It's 80% diet" or " Go compound 5X5 brah!" trap, but the reality is genetics is the number one factor when it comes to success in the Iron Game.

You beat 200 trained runners without any training and while actively smoking? Is that like the Ethiopian version of Goodwill Hunting?

Genetics play a role. While Some underestimate it, I think you are highly overestimating it.

He does have a point though.

My girl has West African genetics in her.

She only has to look at a sport, or a weight or anything involving physicality and it just happens so fast it makes my eyes water.

She started training at the gym with me and in about 3 months went from a very slim but traditionally curvy girl to looking like a fitness model and being offered fitness modelling jobs.

She looks more of a natural martial artist having done a handful of classes than me, having trained all my life.

It's amazing to see.

Most contestants were regular college kids. There were at least 2 dozen runners though. And another 20-30 college athletes who did other sports.

I've never used genetics as an excuse. I'm deep into the bodybuilding tunnel and most likely will be for the rest of my life.

But I've seen far to many instances like the ones a previously mentioned to dismiss genetics as the Number 1 factor in the game.

RE: Weightlifting is not a panacea for attraction problems
Genetics can make it harder, or easier, to make gains, yes. But its almost irrelevant at amateur levels.

If one person does 4x1hour sessions (to use an example from my previous post) a week for 3 years and gains 15KG of muscle, and one person does the same but gains 10KG of muscle, they've both massively improved their physical fitness and their attractiveness to women - even if one of them has had 50% better growth than the other. Moaning about how some people have it easier than you due to their "genetic advantage" just comes across as trying to find an excuse for not looking as good as them.

Put in other contexts:

- "oh some people are genetically more predisposed to be intelligent than me, why should I even try hard in school/college/work? They're just going to beat me at it anyway"
- "oh some people are genetically more predisposed to be facially attractive than me, why should I even bother trying to game women? They're just going to beat me at it anyway"

Sure, you mightn't achieve things as easily as those who're genetically gifted. But in weightlifting ANY man can reach a stage where they look good enough that it gets them laid after only a few years of natural training - thats the beauty of it.

RE: Weightlifting is not a panacea for attraction problems
2 hour sessions 6 days a week sounds like way too much to me, if you are natural.

Are you guys all in the advanced/elite strength category? Only then would I go to 4 days per week, such as with some versions of 5/3/1.

Even Rippetoe's Texas Method (one of the harder intermediate programs) is 3 days per week, and only one of those days is a brutal volume day which might take two hours. (Sometimes the TM is split into four days to keep sessions shorter. )

If only you knew how bad things really are.

Exactly. And you're a perfect example yourself. I seem to remember reading somewhere that you have OHP'd 180kg. I'm stronger than 99% of people I meet, and with an OHP around 90kg, I'm not far off being competitive in lightweight strongman (sub 200lbs) - I've also held national rankings for more than one sport, so my genes are pretty good in the first place. And yet your OHP is literally double mine. Even if I got on the juice with a vengeance, it is extremely unlikely that I'd ever get close to that kind of size and strength.

I don't think anyone disputes that you should go to the gym, or that with a consistent, long term training, sleeping and nutrition plan you can transform your physique and see the benefits of that. But I think there is a lot of hyperbole in this thread about how big and ripped you can be, as a natural, in the space of a couple of years unless you have pretty obscene genetics.

For example, Richie P, when you say you can get huge and ripped on 2 hours training each week, and that that time includes meaningful conditioning sessions, I suspect that either you have insane genetics and your DNA should be mapped, that if you have a top 5% physique and normal genetics that you did not build it following that schedule, or that you have not built a remarkable physique.

Equally, at the risk of looking stupid and being proven wrong, I'd have to respectfully disagree with Strikeback's assertion that you can get to AB's size and leanness at his height naturally (I believe I'm correct in thinking he is circa 6' and close to 250lbs).

And again, Zatara, I would respectfully disagree with your post too, that 'all you have to do is 1 hour, 4x/week in the gym, only drink booze on the weekend, eat well and get enough sleep'. Sure, if you want a decent body, top 20% or whatever. But if we're really talking a top 5% body here, which Moma and others have suggested is just a matter of a couple of years training right and eating well, then I'd have to disagree. Two nights of drinking on the weekend could easily put you 1000 calories over your macros. 'Eating well' if you really want a top 5% body that is noticeably huge and chiseled, means being meticulous about macros, and structuring your life to ensure you can meet those macros, unless you are getting some assistance that makes it easier to stay lean. I also sincerely believe that if you want the 'top 5%' body that guys are talking about in the kind of time frame you're talking about, then at some point you're probably going to need a prolonged period of training 5+ times each week.

You make this sound impossibly hard by using negative language, but its actually not that much of a commitment. If I said to you you need to spend a few years doing:

- 1 hour of exercise a day 4 days a week
- Eating well and getting enough sleep
- Limiting alcohol to weekends

It sounds easy right? Because it is. Yet this would be enough to put any man in his 20s or older in the top 10% of his peer group physically. Blaming things on genetic outliers etc is just making excuses.

You guys are hilarious, I swear I don't even know why I am bother replying at this point. So I'm using "negative language" because I used the words "prepared" and "devote", sounds like we got some super sensitive SJW's on here.

Yes you need to be "prepared" if you want to succeed in crafting a top notch body that includes knowing what lifts to do and how to do them, that includes scheduling the time to go to the gym, having the right supplements, and diet. That all involves preparation.

Same deal with devotion, you got to be devoted if you plan on being in the gym for a minimum of 3 days a week, but I'm saying 4-6 to get the results we describe. Shit happens in life, people get tired, beaten down, downtrodden, sick, we travel, we party, we meet girls... To stay consistent on your work out plan requires a certain level of devotion.

Once again I'm stating facts, I'm about to retire from this thread, since it's basically amounting to a bunch of overly sensitive cry babies.

Try it. I guarantee someone who only drinks at weekends, sleeps well, eats decently, and lifts weights 4x1hour a week for 2 or 3 years will be in the top 10% of males in his early 20s, top 5% of males late 20s, and top 2% in his 30s. Most men are in awful shape, and it only gets worse with age.

Sure, by not counting macros, and by drinking at weekends, you won't be professional athlete fit. You won't ever be under 10%BF, even with cuts for holidays. But you will be fitter than the VAST majority of your peers, and you'll be fit enough that you'll get laid because of it.

People massively overestimate the amount of effort required to look good. They start working out, overtrain for a few months, obsess over everything they eat, then give up. That, or they stick to a routine for years, but regularly go drinking midweek. Or miss workout sessions. Or don't bust their ass when they're actually in the gym.

The two most importantly things in amateur weightlifting are 1) not overtraining then giving up (ie killing yourself working out 6 days a week for 2 hours a go, and obsessing over every calorie) and 2) not cheating on your routine. In my experience, the people who make the most gains have realistic programs but maintain consistency over a period of years.

Anecdotally, I have terrible genetics. I was 6ft 0 140lbs when I was 18 - skinny as a rake, but with a noticeable amount of fat around my midsection. My male relatives are all skinnyfat. Ten years on I'm 6ft0 220lb walking around weight now - not monstrous, but big enough that unless I'm in Australia or certain US cities (LA/Miami) I usually stand out from the crowd. If I go on a beach holiday I'll usually cut down to 210lb - it's worth making some short term lifestyle (diet) sacrifices for an 8 week cut for that.

Throughout most of those years I drank every weekend, and only ever calorie counted when I needed to cut for a beach holiday. I havent done steroids, and never lifted weights more than 4x a week.

I've had a number of friends go through a similar lifting evolution too, leading me to believe that I'm not a special snowflake. It really isn't rocket science - ANYONE can do this. It's just that the vast, vast majority of guys make excuses and don't stick with it. The key is consistency.

edit1: Though I do completely agree with your opinions if someone wants to look like a fitness model - low bf% + high muscle mass is extremely difficult to achieve naturally. I'm just basing my opinions on someone wanting to look good enough that they get laid because of it, ie they standout in a bar. Which is a significantly lower, more achievable goal. Top 5% for the latter vs top 1% for the former for someone in their mid 20s, say.

edit2:
(11-12-2015 01:16 PM)OGNorCal707 Wrote:  "stating facts" [snip]

My issue with your language was that it attempts to make the process of being in the top 5% of men physically sound far more difficult than it actually is. 2hours a day, 6 days a week, 5 years of training etc. There are plenty of guys in this thread who workout far less than that, who are at a level of fitness that gets them laid. By overanalysing the process it does just sound like you're making excuses that will allow you to give up.

H1N1, I didn't say you would be in the top 5% in two years. I said you would see a difference IF you trained properly AND consistently. Rudebwoy said something key, get a gym buddy to help push you, my best gains were when I trained with my white Brit friend and we both stepped up our games. Many of you guys spend more energy trying to debunk facts intellectually when it's easier to drop down and rep 100 push-ups in 5 sets. Game is not an end game but it's a behaviour so you have to get out and practise. Building your body is one of the few areas that you have control of so start the journey and stop looking at what the Nigerian is doing. Put in the proper work before we can determine you have poor genetics.

I don't think this thread is about seeing improvements in one's physique from working out, I don't think anyone is questioning that, this thread is about weightliftings affect on women's sexual attraction.

No one is denying that two years in the gym will improve your physique, and women prefer men with a nice body, but when you got guys on here like Anonymous saying women will fuck you solely because you have an incredible chiseled body and then a bunch of people jump on that wagon and back it up, we need to make the distinction of what kind of body that is.

That kind of body is what I'd say is in the top 5% of all men, that is when you become "impressive" enough that you will really begin stimulating women's sexual buttons. To get that kind of body requires more than just a couple years in the gym, which is what I've been trying to argue here from day 1.

It is an achievable goal if you put in the work, or have certain other "advantages" that I've gone into in length on here.

Og, let's move away from percentages regarding all men. That makes it look too daunting. By even getting a gym membership, one is already in the top 5%. Game will progressively get easier, the better your body looks. It's not a race to the finish because there is no finish. Don't break it down to absolutes too much. A member here says it boils down to consistency. Some guys treating it like a 2 year community college program, no. In 2 years of solid training with 3-4 days a week of training at an hour a pop, I can probably say that ALL guys on here will notice a dramatic increase in reaping lizards. One will NEVER get to a point when the reptiles are just hopping in his lap for sex consistently WITHOUT the mansaying a word. If that's what anyone is hoping for then back to the STAR WARS museum they should go for fantasy reenactions. Proper training means proper eating too. Not scoffing fast food and biscuits and then howling about their guts and chunky arms. Also important is to wear complimenting clothes. Some guys insist on wearing baggy retro Yao Ming jerseys and then saying lifting doesn't pay. This is the West, guys. The fitness supplements in North America are par none.

Moma - if I've put words in your mouth, then I apologise. I think at this point we are all talking past each other, and most likely would not really disagree at all were we sat around a table discussing it. The problem is most likely the medium rather than the message.

Likewise Zatara, I have read and appreciate your response, and find much to agree with in it, but don't wish contribute further to the confusion at this point. I will respectfully bow out of the thread.

All the best, Gents.

I have done exactly that. Actually my workouts are usually 1.5 hours...only longer if I'm dragging a bit. I think it's better to keep them shorter.

If only you knew how bad things really are.

I'll chime in here just for laughs. If by having a gym membership, you're in the top 5%, then achieving a physique such as AB's puts you in the top 0.01 or 0.001% of men. It's just like achieving a 9 figure net worth. It's game changing. No argument at all. Women will throw themselves at you, proposition you, and offer to fuck you in public in broad daylight.

Rex, they say you should keep your rest time between sets at around 60 seconds to keep the workout intense. If it's taking you 1.5 hours, you are probably in there too long and need to break up the training time. Dedicate one day to just chest, another day to tris and shoulders and another day to back and bis. If you are still dragging on, superset to boost intensity and save time. Or add another day to make it four days a week. 45-60 mins and you should be out. Abs every workout day.

Haha definitely would if I was 225 at sub 8% bf brother! I have friends that are 6'3, pushing 260 at sub 12% and are propositioned by women everywhere they go, I've witnessed the groping and the jumping on. It's a total different game these guys are running.

I disagree with a lot of this Moma.

Rest time will vary depending on how heavy you are going and your goals. I rest 3-5 minutes between sets on my main lift, which are 3-5 reps for 3-5 sets. These are basically max sets for me and the goal is to complete each set, that's why the longer rest times. Jamie Lewis/Chad Waterbury would have you rest 60 seconds, but with lighter weight (but still heavy) and more volume. So rest time depends.

I rest ~2 minutes between my accessory lifts which are usually 4x8-10 on lifts like bent over rows, DB bench press, weighted dips, etc. I push myself to the max on these also. If I waited a minute or less doing 10 reps on heavy weighted dips I wouldn't be able to finish them. Isolation movements like curls or tricep pushdowns I could, but not my main accessory lifts.

As a natural novice/intermediate lifter only hitting a muscle 1x per week like you suggest is leaving a LOT of gains on the table. Not to mention, you forgot legs hah. 2-3x per week is much better. It's better to hit the muscle group more often, with slightly less volume, for better gains. A 3x per week fully body (Jamie Lewis/Chad Waterbury) or a 4x per week rotating upper/lower (Lyle McDonald) is great for this. A push/pull/squat if you want to lift 5-6 days per week is good as well.

My workouts usually last 1-1:30, depending on how much accessory work I want to do that day, which is determined by how fired up I am feeling.

I think it's been pretty thoroughly covered that a body part split is not the way to train.

I have to run to the gym, but there's a lot of info out there for guys who want to look into this for themselves.

RE: Weightlifting is not a panacea for attraction problems
There is a lot of contrasting information in regards to what you should and should not do [Which is probably relatively confusing for any newbie lifters] so I figure I'll add my 2 cents on my lifting history:

Current stats:

Age: 28
Height: 184cm
Weight: 96kg [211lb]
Bodyfat: Roughly 16%

Starting stats:

Age: 18
Height: 184cm
Weight: 64kg [140lb]
Bodyfat: 9%

Throughout my high school years I was an elite 800m runner. Essentially the training involved for this sport was roughly 80 kilometres per week comprising of 10 kilometre 'slow' runs, high intensity intervals, hill sprints and 3 weights training sessions per week.

I was lucky enough to train with an olympic strength and conditioning coaches for near on 4 years. Barring any minor alterations for event specificity the staples of nearly every workout was 'Olympic Lifts', Squats and Occasionally dumbbell work.

At the age of 18 my knee's were officially busted and I couldn't compete at long distances anymore. I no longer had any support structure and was on my own. I spent the next year 'trying' to bulk up. I went from 64kg to 70kg [155lb]. Most of that would have been fat. My weights training remained the same.

For roughly the next two years I made no impact on my weight. Hovering between 70-72 despite eating over 3500 calories per day. It made absolutely no sense what so ever. Finally I bit the bullet and sought out a nutritionist.

As a prelude to the nutritionist: I was following a Paleo Diet since the age of 18. For pure health purposes the diet made absolute sense. 3500 calories comprising of primarily fats and proteins. One hundred dollars later following the appointment with the nutritionist I was essentially told to eat more carbs. I boosted them to 50% of my macronutrient intake. Kept the calories at 3500 and suddenly jumped from 70kg to 85kg [185lb] within one year.

In terms of weights: One thing I have learn from years of elite training, coupled with cross training at a variety of other sports [And even changing from coach to coach] is that philosophy varies greatly. In essence there are many ways to skin a cat. My personal advice would be to get the diet sorted. It's 90% of the battle. I'm not here to advocate any one particular diet because everyone is different BUT…

…Pay a little cash to find out what works for you and watch the numbers rise. Under the right circumstances 99.9% of the population can add up to 20lb of lean body mass to their weight and irrespective of how you're built that will be a monumental game changer.

PS: Consider this: I owned a franchise gym in Sydney and officially only 3% of the nations population use a gym. 3%. Of that 3% a significant percentage are what we call 'sleepers' meaning they are paying for a gym membership they aren't using. 30% of that 3% are also females. If you make a considerable change to your physique… In terms of the overall market that's going to put you in the very top percentile of men physically.
