I have a possible job offer for an entry level position in San Francisco. It seems like a cool place to live but the cost of living seems crazy (being from the Dallas area).However, I know its not best to determine life choices by the just the measurables on the you see on the internet. However, ironically, I would like to you know your guys input if you live in San Francisco or have a friend who lives in San Francisco, is it that expensive? Is it feasible to have a alpha lifestyle ( consistent pussy every week) on an entry level corporate accounting salary? ($50,000yr). Or would I be pinching pennies being a homebody because "its too expensive"

You'll be sorry at the expenses and the level of action here (I'm in town for business a lot). Housing is ridiculous - people lining up as if for an interview to rent a decent place for gobs of money. Think 2k for a studio. With all the Silicon valley dorks fucking up the lifestyle and of course the gay culture (I think DC is even worse in that area) the place should be called Man Francisco to be more accurate. For what you're offered I'd stay away. You can be an accountant anywhere.

You won't be able to live in SF with that salary, from what my friend who lives here has told me. You'll be living somewhere like Oakland and taking the BART to work.

$50k is also not a very good salary for S.F. coming right out of college with an accounting degree.

I feel like $60k would be more fair if you work downtown.

I am a professional in tech and I stay away from S.F. if that tells you anything, and my earning potential at this stage is much larger than yours. I'd only go there if I had an iron-clad vision for a start up or had an offer from one with insane upside.

No, the best course is to pick a city where 50k will get you more than a poverty lifestyle. Even oakland is expensive, just less expensive than SF.

Yeah that makes sense, but if push comes to shove and this the only job offer I have, I'll probably just pack my shit and head to Oakland. I'm just wondering how the average player with an average salary pulls and bangs Oakland w/o living paycheck to paycheck.

Don't go. You'll be miserable if you plan to have a heterosexual lifestyle. Keep in mind the weather is actually pretty awful in the West Bay much of the year.

Women are much better looking with much better attitudes in Dallas while real incomes are much higher in Dallas.

I'm assuming this isn't a since I'm a bit surprised there are no jobs in Dallas for accountants.

You can do it, Bay Area local here. You'll need to CL for a room, but you can squeeze into a 700-900 a month spot in a house. Don't do it if you have a car payment though, for one, or high student loan payments.

Agreed, pretty much sums up SF. No comments on the pay thing -- 50 thou just means you'd save less and have less lifestyle, but technically could still be done.

Great points, especially in bold. I won't make a recommendation to anyone either way as it's their choice, but way too many glasses-wearing, non-working out, high-pitch voice mousy males here that ruin the environment -- no sense of male / female distinction.

According to salary.com, SF has a 60% higher COL than Dallas. There is a difference between living and surviving. Could you survive? Sure. But an "alpha" lifestyle (whatever that is) seems highly unlikely. I'm sorry to say that $50K is basically poverty wages with respect to lifestyle as we understand it in almost every major US city. NYC/DC/Boston? Forget it. LA/SF? No way. Maybe Portland, Chicago? No clue.

OP have you actually done any research on rents in SF? If not, why not? Look for a place and see what you can get for where you want to live. I'm sure you can find a room in a group home or something similar, but it won't be a nice studio in Nob Hill.

However, that being said, I bet various scenesters in SF are getting laid just fine, but they don't have two cents to rub together. So from that perspective, the right niche (and fitting into that niche) could be rewarding from a fun/girls perspective, but it won't be anything swanky. It all depends on you. Accounting can be done anywhere. I'd focus on 2nd tier cities that have the things you enjoy.

For reasons I won't specify because of concerns of privacy my job opportunities are a limited. That's why I'm asking, I know the measurables would have me living in poverty, but as Menace stated I was curious about the niches and if there is intangible benefits to living in the bay area. For example, I know living in New York is expensive as hell, but from what I've been told there is always free concerts going on that would cost you money in second tier city.Also,you don't have to worry about taking care of a car in NYC.

You barely have the cost of a car in SF, generally speaking, there's room to move up in most industries while staying in the city.

Girl-wise, night game is a tad difficult, but day game and online are fine. I have a friend crushing a steady one a week off tinder, and he's not exactly a Ken doll.

Tons of tourists to snag, and while there's a ton of dudes, a lot are gay/nerdy and aren't competition

I live in Bay Area, visit SF every week,
city is a great,
very expensive to buy and to rent apartments (from $1500 -2000).
lots of people working in IT (which is booming) have a salary $100k +,
play in stock market, have company's stocks etc,

witch $50k salary can be rented room only imo.
Lots of jobs, perhaps you can a build a carrier there.

Bro $50k/year is chump change in San Francisco.

Cost of living is insane, taxes are through the roof, food/nightlife is costly.

If you want to have any kind of live whatsoever outside of work you'd need at least double that (ideally $150k+)

You also need the patience of a saint to deal with the feminazis, ubiquitous bums and crackheads, brazen queers, rich nerds who can't shut up about their stupid startups, the organic yoga muesli munchers and all of the other weirdos that makes this city both amazing and intolerable all at the same time.

Expect a love/hate relationship.

And remember you aren't paying for pussy paradise, you're paying for gay paradise.

I have no clue how you survive around here on 50k a year. I like to be able to go out wherever I want and do whatever I want. I don't have an expensive taste though, luckily. On less than 100k my lifestyle would be very difficult. This city is stifling enough because of the stuck up tech community, it might be difficult to add money problems to that.

Someone mentioned the lifestyle and the dorks around here. Completely true. I'm tired of lame ass guys talking about their jobs with the highest enthusiasm. Everyone is a slave to their company, but they fuckin love it. I rarely do anything in SF, although I live in SF, because I don't like the vibe. The Bay Area has a lot of other good areas though - East Bay, North Bay. That's for hanging out and chilling.

Girls wise ... it's ok, but certainly nothing too good. You can have consistent flow of pussy, if you invest the necessary time. The problem that I have is that dot com bishes are way too boring and they pull me into the work world, while the rest of the girls are fun, but they're broke and they're one difficult life situation away from being outed from the area. Talk about income inequality. SF is where most of the talent is, but I like the East Bay chicks and the hippie girls. They're broke and their lifes are hopeless, but at least they're not licking corporate ass.

I lived in the Bay Area for about ten years ending about ten years ago, when I left because I thought I was aging out in late 40s without big bux.

It's a unique place worldwide, I think it would be interesting to anyone interested in where culture is going -whether you want it or not-

The vehemence of the "It SUCKS" response kind of tells you there's some magic there.

Also, the Bay Area is not an either/or decision, although SF is WAY out of my price and optimal age range now, Sacramento is only a 70 minute very comfortable AMTRAK ride away (plugs at the seats, lovely view of the shoreline as you near the city, usually you don't have a seatmate and can manspread) and the apartments there are probably less than half SF prices.

AND there are suburbs, albeit expensive, all the way up Route 80 as long as you don't have to commute. Commuting unless you can use BART and don't mind loud subways seems crazy to me.

There's lots of open space even just 15 miles away in Berkeley where you can do what amounts to almost wilderness level mountain bike riding in a mild climate. You can ride a bike outside year-round pretty comfortably in the Bay Area, no doubt-- 40f-90f absolute temperature range.

Try that in Chicago or Texas.

I used to ride I80 late at night after band practice and there's no traffic after 11 and it's a splendid road. Up into the Sierra foothills in the moonlight. You can get a totally different, way cheaper lifestyle just 40 minutes out from SF, and the climate is more sunny (about 9 months a year) the further inland you go.

The admitted downside is IMO it is a place of diminishing returns unless you strike it big because the intensity of the youth worship there. Girls ideally want VERY close to their age, and so as you go 28-35........it's an uphill battle.

You won't starve on $50K. I know some Mexican families of four who live in the Mission on $30K/year.

For $50K/yr you have three options:

- Stay in Oakland and BART over or drive across the Bay Bridge every morning at 5 A.M. Taking BART from Oakland to Downtown SF is about $4.50/single-trip, versus $4 (non-traffic) and $6 (rush hours) for a round trip.

- Live in the West SF neighborhoods. The Sunset and Richmond are much nicer and you'll get by with $2000/month with a roommate. If you don't want to drive downtown for work, 30 min. on MUNI is really efficient.



Or you can live in the Ingleside. For the Ingleside, go on Craigslist and assemble a group of City College of SF or San Francisco State University students to rent a house, and you'll pay ~$1000/month. Ingleside is a little more ghetto, but the Balboa Park BART station will shoot you downtown in seven minutes flat.

San Francisco laws favor tenants over landlords by far, so you'll want to learn how to get your money. Familiarize yourself with the Ellis Act, which can potentially refund you over $5000/person, if the landlord forcefully evicts you. If you have any disabilities (for example, veteran), then you can get over $10K.

- Go South: This means Daly City, San Mateo and South San Francisco. You can get an entire house to yourself (2 bed, 2 bath, 2 car garage + utilities) for about $2500/month. Public transportation is useless out there, but you can access to four Costco locations, ten minutes from SFO airport and more open shopping plazas (Tanforan, San Bruno and Serramonte, Colma). Suburban sprawl is beautiful.

But honestly, only stay here for family or short-term bucks. Why would you want to stay in a city with men who marry their burritos?
