In my high school and college, it really wasn't that bad. We had a few cats who were in the closet, some were gay, really didn't matter. Live and let live.

But this guy is an attention whore or this is his way of coming out eventually. Asking some guy to prom is just weird, he'll probably be positioned as some kind of "cool" kid now for the rest of the year on the surface, but no girl will touch him with a 10 foot pole. They'll take some selfies with him, they'll get in a circle and have him and his "bro" dance together, but unless he's an asshole, he's never going to convert any of this fame game into high school pussy. As others said, it's mostly fat and emotionally damaged women who actually like gay guys. Every hot girl I've been with who wasn't completely fucked in the head has vocalized disgust with guy gays. They're not necessarily homophobic, but they want nothing to do with gays and bisexuals. Women want real men.

I'm aware it's different elsewhere, but in California there are very few girls that actively espouse negative views on homosexuality in a social setting

Being around gays really is just a status symbol these days. It's to show everyone how open minded and tolerant you are.
